Children's Literature
"What are volcanoes? Where and why do they happen?" With these words, geologist Peter Clarkson plunges into a dynamic subject encompassing plate tectonics, the "Ring of Fire," geysers, hot springs, earthquakes and, of course, major eruptions. Although he presents just an overview, Clarkson does an excellent job of explaining the basic science underlying the structure, origin and activity of volcanoes. His prose is sophisticated, eloquent and precise. Dramatic photographs, colorful diagrams and a tectonic-plate map help the reader appreciate how volcanoes have helped shape the planet and how the volcanoes have been shaped by geological processes that originate deep within the Earth. A glossary and recommended reading list are included. This book complements instructional materials used in both middle and high school earth science/geology courses. It is part of the "WorldLife Library" series. 2000, Voyageur Press, $16.95. Ages 12 up. Reviewer: Joyce Schwartz

It is hard to imagine a better brief introduction to the subject. The author is a former geologist for the British Antarctic Survey. The text, which is informative and interesting, includes the following chapter titles: What are Volcanoes?, Where are Volcanoes?, Associated Phenomena, Volcanic Hazards and Benefits, Predicting Eruptions, and Famous Volcanic Eruptions. The numerous color illustrations are stunning, especially the photographs, and there is a glossary as well as an index and a brief bibliography. What particularly impressed me were the diagrams of the earth's crust and of an active volcano. However, it is the text that is most impressive, for its clear style and obvious deep understanding. Many topics are introduced in this book, from geothermal power to the history of great volcanic eruptions, plate tectonics, and tsunamis (the seismic sea waves that can result from eruptions of oceanic volcanoes). Any library would benefit from having this book, whatever other holdings it may already have on the subject. WorldLife Library. (P. O. Box 338, Stillwater MN 55082).
