Children's LiteratureThis book about volleyball is written for a young audience. The "Ground Rules" section contains a number of introductory chapters that include "History of Volleyball," "Where to Play Volleyball," "Players on the Court," scoring, equipment, "Putting the Ball in Play," "Get on the Ball!," and "Stopping Points." The "Playing the Game" section covers scoring points, playing the ball, preventing the point, errors and illegal moves, calling the game, coaching the game, and recent rule changes. "The People, Places, and Fun" section talks about volleyball variations, including ways to play it, playing in the sand, the famous faces of volleyball, and the Olympics. The "What Happened When?" timeline, the "Fun Volleyball Facts," and "Volleyball Words to Know" are good supplements. Other helpful sections include the glossary, "Where To Learn More," and the index. I think that this will be a popular book in schools and public libraries; It will fill a need for children who are looking forward to the upper levels of sports they enjoy. Part of the "For Fun!" series. 2006, Compass Point Books/Capstone Press, Ages 7 to 9.
