All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
In 1924 Red McKenzie (a former jockey and bellhop) formed an unusual novelty trio, the Mound City Blue Blowers, consisting of him playing a comb (covered in tissue or wax paper), Dick Slevin on kazoo, and banjoist Jack Bland. Although one can be justified in feeling that a little of this goes a long way, there are plenty of hot performances here, including "San" (one of two selections that add Frankie Trumbauer on C-melody sax), "Tiger Rag," "Panama," and "Hot Honey." It is good to have all of this material gathered in one place at last (the packaging is perfect), and the novelty music is certainly fun.
