Jewell Parker Rhodes is a professor of American literature and creative writing at Arizona State University. The recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Award in Fiction, she lives with her husband and two children in Scottsdale, Arizona.

    Worth the historical journey.....

    I thought this was an awesome read. The rich depiction of Voodoo and the depth of the characters made this a wonderful piece of literature. If anything, I would've loved to see more about the life of Marie Laveau that matches research; such as: her marriage, children, occupations etc....nonetheless, definitely worth reading.

    A must read for all independent women

    This book is the best book I have ever read. I can't get enough of it. I have studied many different religions including that of the VooDoo persuasion and I must admitt that this book brings out a lot of the forgotten aspects of this amazing religion. Marie is a strong woman who knows what she wants. Back in the times that this book took place women were treated as pieces of meat as was she. then she turns around and shows that she can be stronger without being held back because of a man. I give her much credit. I would have to say that this book is a must read, even if you are not into Voodoo.

    Please Read It!

    This book was wonderful. From the very moment I picked it up, I was hooked. As soon as I finished, I flipped from the last page to the first page and started it again. I didn't want the story to end. I have never enjoyed reading a book more than I did this. Please read it. I recommend it to anyone that can read!
