Overview

Autobiographically inspired, Rhys created stories of the slightly adrift every woman looking for an anchor in a cold, hostile landscape. Her heroine in Voyage in the Dark is Anna Morgan, a young woman in her late teens, relocated to England from her beloved home in the West Indies. She works as a chorus girl, traveling the country to dank boarding rooms and shabby theaters. Fortune seems to grab her one day in the shape of a wealthy, older man who sets her up in London, calling for her as his needs dictate. Anna falls in love with him, and allows herself to rely on him totally. When he grows tired of her, she begins a long spiraling decline. This is poignant, tense writing by the woman whom A. Alvarez called "the best living English novelist."

What People Are Saying

Jonathan Raban
Ever so often someone comes along with prose style so alert and fresh, so remote from the mainstream idiom of English social fiction that it seems miraculous that they should be able to write like that and be British too. Jean Rhys is such a writer.

The startling tale of a young girl's journey into darkness...

Voyage in the Dark, by Jean Rhys, provides exceptional insight into a young lady¿s search for love and acceptance. Anna Morgan, the protagonist, leaves the warmth and comfort of her home in the West Indies to face a cold and cruel future in England. Due to her lack of family support, Anna must search for values and security in an unfamiliar world. Jean Rhys poignantly depicts the destitute lifestyle of Anna Morgan as a prostitute. Rhys uses stream of consciousness writing in order for the reader to experience Anna¿s voyage into darkness first hand. In addition to empathizing with Anna, the reader feels as though he or she could jump into the book and give Anna a hug. Indeed the story of Anna Morgan is emotionally compelling from beginning to end. I would highly recommend this book to sensitive individuals who enjoy reading books about the challenges that women faced in modern-day London. Perhaps the most riveting aspect of this novel is its close resemblance to the author¿s life. Certainly Jean Rhys¿ vivid insight may be attributed to her own voyage in the dark.

Great amount of emotion expressed by Rhys.

I would recommend this book to anyone that does not think that they would enjoy a novel that was written nearly a century ago. When I first began to read Voyage in the Dark by Jean Rhys I thought that the book was a little dry at the beginning. With this book being a school assignment I knew that I would have to continue reading it whether I liked it or not. After I got quarter of the way through the book I couldn¿t put it down. Jean Rhys is a wonderful writer that can fully express her own experiences in a well-written novel. Voyage in the Dark is a novel about a young woman whose life goes from bad to worse. Anna is thrown into a new place at a young age and is expected to survive on her own. When faced with the realization that she is going to have to work to afford a place to live, Anna turns to prostitution. It seems at the being of the novel that she is so young and naive that she doesn¿t realize that by her taking money from the men that she sleeps with, that she is really selling her body. Anna longs to be loved and feels that if she can be close to a man that maybe he will love her. Her desire for love is the result of losing both of her parents and basically disowned by her stepmother. Although this novel can be slow at some points and very sad, the ending might not be what you expected. I love to read books that when I get to the ending I wish that it would still go on, and this is one of those books.
