Overview

A big, brash history of Guns n’ Roses charismatic, talented and idiosyncratic leader

“An archetypal rock biography that captures the runaway-train spirit of the singer and his band—You don’t have to be a Guns N’ Roses fanatic to dig this energetic, comprehensive, few-holds-barred portrait of modern metal’s most charismatic figure.”—Kirkus Reviews

Even in the rock world, a figure like Axl Rose doesn’t come along very often. Mercurial and brilliant, deluded and imperious, Rose defies easy description. W.A.R. reveals Rose’s childhood influences (and how he got his name), tracks the birth of G n’ R and delves into the stories behind their monster albums Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion. But with those successes came excesses—drugs, infighting and a lead singer who morphed from eccentric to seemingly unhinged.

Journalist Mick Wall had unprecedented access to Rose and G n’ R during their heyday and gives a more richly detailed portrait of the band than you’ve ever read before. W.A.R. has fresh views on:

—the death of two fans at the Donington Park concert in England

—Rose’s fallout with all the other original G n’ R band members, including Slash

—fights with Kurt Cobain, Vince Neil and fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger

—Rose’s no-shows at concerts throughout his career

—the lead singer’s becoming a recluse at his Malibu mansion for most of the last fifteen years

—the much-gossiped-about and long-awaited album Chinese Democracy

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
If you're beginning to suspect that all too many celebrity biographies resemble one another, it's time to sample the fierce satanic outbursts of William Axl Rose. Wal Mick's unauthorized biography displays the controversial lead singer of Guns N' Roses in full brilliance and fury. Mick proves convincingly that Rose was raising hell years before he became famous shouting expletives as a heavy metal rock star. Aficionados of rock gossip will relish W.A.R.'s impressive roundup of Axl's almost innumerable feuds, including his nuclear fallouts with every other original member of his band.

I love Axl Rose, but this book is full of lyes!

This book is a bunch of untrue crap. In interviews, Slash stated, "I skimmed through the book a little, and the parts about us on tour, it's a load of sh*t. I can't bilieve that the guy who wrote this isn't being sued or something." Axl denies lots of the events, too. That's why the front cover says 'The Unauthorized Biography'- because it's a load of junk, and that's why it's unauthorized! Any one thinking of buying this book or who have bought this book and juged Axl Rose harshly, don't do it. It's not his fault some guy is lying about him to make money, and it's not your fault you bilieved it-- not every one's as bad a liar as he is-- but don't think of him as a mean guy. Think of the author of this book as a mean guy.

    W.A.R. - Sad but True

This book is a case study in how to fail. The lessons that Axl Rose teaches through his actions are the complete opposite of Jim Collins' Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't. In fact, business schools should assign W.A.R. to students in order to teach them why it's important to treat their peers and colleagues with respect.

That said, W.A.R. is a must-read for all fans of rock. For better or worse, it paints an interesting portrait of one of the genre's most mysterious front men.

    I Also Recommend:

Ups and Downs of a Great Rocker

This highly entertaining bio of Guns N' Roses' snarly-voiced front man and driving force Axl Rose isn't written in the finest style - in fact, some of the sentence construction would make an English teacher cringe. And I sensed that much of the material was recycled from old articles and interviews. But who cares? Beyond the constant public controversy over his lifestyle and unpredictable behavior, I wasn't really familiar with Axl Rose anyway. So following the metamorphosis of the lean, mean young rock machine into a sturdier, middle-aged, but still contentious music icon made for riveting reading. I recommend it whether or not you like rock'n'roll.
