Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A teenager from a big city gets an opportunity to experience a horseback riding camp as a junior counselor for the summer. He is especially grateful that he will not have to watch over his little brothers. During that summer Nick learns to love the horses and gains confidence as he finds out that he can handle most of the problems that he encounters at the camp. The story follows Nick's adventures, such as finding a lost camper, making friends with a girl, learning to ride Western style, and performing in a horse show. Some of the episodes seem contrived and problems are solved too easily. One incident in which a horse gets hit by a truck and has to be shot seems out of place for this type of book. The illustrations are nice but look dated. The story has some fun and interesting events, but it lacks overall tension. The subject matter may be of interest to reluctant readers. 2006 (orig. 2002), Pelican Publishing Company, Ages 8 to 12.
