CHAPTER 1
Hi! My name is Emma Lu. You can call me Emma. I have an amazing true story to tell you. I am a white dog with a very sweet face. I am a mixed breed of Shih Tzu and Maltese.
My life began in a patch of woods along a busy highway. I was lonely with no friends to play with. I chased the squirrels, but they ran way up into the trees. I barked at the birds, but they flew away. I was sad. The woods were my only home. Oh, how I wished for a friend.
The cars were always whizzing by, fast in both directions. I tried to cross the street once, but a fast car scared me and I turned to run. I tripped and fell down a small hill. OUCH! A branch scratched my left eye. I could not open my eye. OUCH!
I sat in the grass and tried to take a nap. But, I could not sleep. My left eye really hurt. With one eye open, I noticed a white car on the side of the road. A lady got out of the car. I barked at her softly. Deep down I hoped that she would give me a band-aid for my eye or something yummy to eat. She walked towards me and smiled. "Come here," she whispered as she lowered herself to greet me.
"Oh no! You are hurt. Let me help you," the lady said. She picked me up and put me in the car. She took me to an animal hospital and petted me the entire ride.
The people at the animal hospital were really nice to me. They fixed my wounds and bandaged my cuts. I lost my left eye from the sharp branch. Thankfully, I can still see with my right eye. I will make the most of this accident. I will be a one-eyed wonder!
We left the animal hospital and got back into the car. I was nervous. "Oh please, don't take me back to the lonely woods," I thought. The nice lady turned to me and asked, "Would you like to come home with me?" I wiggled my tail and licked her hand. "Yes! Yes! Yes!"
"Let's name you Emma," she said. "Emma Lu." "Today will be your birthday. We will celebrate November 1st forever." I was thrilled to have a name and a birthday! I wiggled and wagged my tail. I almost forgot about my missing eye.
As we pulled into the driveway of my new home, I noticed a man and another small dog. "Emma Lu, meet your new Dad and dog sister, Kassy Sue." They both ran to me with excitement. Dad petted me and kissed my head. Kassy barked and wagged her tail. I wagged back at her. I have a family. I have a real Mom and Dad. I even have a dog sister to play with. I cannot believe my luck!
Kassy and I started to run and play. "Why do you only have one eye?" Kassy asked me. I told her the story of my fall and the branch that hurt me. I explained how Mom found me and took me to the animal hospital. "Can you see ok?" Kassy asked curiously. "Yes, I can see," I answered. "I still have my right eye. I am the one-eyed wonder." Kassy wagged her tail in a giggle. "I am happy you are here. I like having a new sister to play with."
Kassy and I look different, but we are very much the same. I am white. Kassy is black with some white around her face and feet. I have one eye. Kassy has 2 eyes. I have long fluffy ears. Kassy's ears are perky and small. We both have 4 legs and a tail. We both like to run and play with toys. We both like yummy food and tasty treats. We both like to sit outside and feel the warmth of the sun on our backs.
