Waiting for Parts
In this contemporary coming-of-age novel, naive Sunny Pierce is drawn to good-looking, irresponsible KC. When he returns her attention, she is so flattered that in order to be his constant companion she drops out of high school. With barely enough money to pay the rent, they move into a rundown trailer and struggle to get by. A year later, Sunny is devastated to discover that KC is cheating on her.
Who can she turn to for solace? She has lost touch with friends, and her overbearing, critical mother will only say, "I told you so." Eager to leave KC behind, she throws a suitcase in her beat-up old Datsun pickup, and along with her dog, heads from southern Oregon to Denver to be with her former school friend LeeAnn.
Scared, and with very little money, Sunny is on her own for the first time. Less than halfway to Denver, her pickup breaks down and she has to wait ten days for repair parts to reach Ludlow, the remote Nevada town where she is stranded. The family that operates the garage/motel/cafe befriends her and lets her wait on tables to earn money for lodging and truck repairs. She is attracted to Todd, their 19-year-old son, a horse trainer who teaches Sunny to ride. To help pass the time Sunny, always a country music fan, experiments with song writing. She is invited to perform in the lounge, where applause gives her new confidence.
When her truck is finally fixed, Sunny is sad to leave her supportive new friends but continues on to Denver, where she finds that LeeAnn is less sympathetic than she remembers. Rents are too high and she can't find a job. When Todd calls her, she decides that she might have a promising future in Ludlow where she can be with people who care for her.
