Overview

Following the arrest of one of their colleagues in June 1943, three members of the French Resistance movement, an American, a Frenchman and an Irishman, plan a bold and dangerous operation designed to free him and dozens of other Jewish prisoners being transported to Nazi death camps in Poland. The novel begins in the beautiful countryside of southern France's Luberon Mountain region, and follows the prisoners and their liberators along the train lines from Provence to Paris and then eastward through Alsace and Lorraine. The title refers to one of the Resistance fighters, Samuel Beckett, whose courage and creative resourcefulness are central to the escape operation. On one level, prisoner Jacques Friedland waits for Beckett to liberate him. But on a broader level, readers watch and wait as through this adventure Beckett gains the perspective which will enable him to become one of the twentieth century's most original writers.
