Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Baby animals enjoy the ups and downs of spring in this cheery board book that features flaps on each spread. A ladybug is the first to wake up come spring (readers can find her perched on the reverse of a leaf-shaped flap). She then awakens a baby bunny, chick, and butterfly ("Wake up! Wake up!... The snow has melted, the sun is shining, and the flowers are blooming") before a sudden shower sends them running for cover. Full of grassy greens, budding flowers, and (mostly) clear skies, Davis's crisp, pastel-colored graphics should whet readers' appetites for warmer weather. Ages 2–4. (Jan.)
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
It is spring and many animals that hibernate or at least become less active in the winter are ready to come out and enjoy the warmer weather and all that it offers. The story begins with a ladybug waking up from her snug sleep on a green leaf and she in turn urges the bunny to come out of its burrow to join her in welcoming spring. Other creatures are revealed as flaps are lifted including a baby bird and a butterfly. But wait—something else happens in spring—it rains. The smiles turn to frowns as they all rush to get under the protective cover of a big beautiful red flower. The storm passes quickly and a rainbow fills the sky. A cheery little board book that teaches an easy lesson about all the good things that happen in spring. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
Kirkus Reviews

Ladybug can't wait to share the good news.

After her lengthy snooze, she realizes spring has sprung and hurriedly shares her findings with the resting rabbit. The information builds as the proclamation moves forward. The beetle initially reports that "the snow has melted"; the bunny then also advertises to the chick that "the sun is shining." Each animal joins the group to broadcast the announcement, but a shower threatens all plans. The insect once again leads the group as she encourages them to seek protection under a beautiful flower, its petals opening fully in an extended scene. Stiff flaps, initially difficult to grasp, add slight textual or visual details. While there are several featured characters, the bunny's peculiar shape (with disproportionate head, stumpy limbs and elongated body) serves as the dominant figure. Light skies and sunny flowers add minimal flavor.

This familiar pattern captures little of the renewal associated with the season. (Board book. 1-3)
