    Not if you love real food...

    I'm really into nutrition and exercise so I read as much as I can on the subject. This one, unfortunately, was not well-researched and is filled with more bitterness toward popular weight-loss programs than actual comprehensive nutrition advice. The preface is from one isolated Biggest Loser contestant who has been openly bitter and angry toward the show, and I honestly have to side with the show's trainers and their belief that weighing 400 lbs is MUCH more dangerous than eating 1200 calories/day and exercising 4-6 hrs a day. Whether it is practical for most people is another matter, but saying it's misguided and dangerous is just not true.

    My biggest problem came when the author began to recommend a wide variety of "fake" foods that contain chemical-based sugars and fat-free laboratory creations. If you have cravings for certain foods, you need to learn a healthy way to deal with that. Don't eat a pile of chemical garbage and fool yourself that it's healthy.

    I give it two stars because the author does have a very nice conversational style and is very easy to read. She's an excellent writer. Clearly not a registered dietician, though.

    Also, for e-readers, it seems to be in a constantly changing font. I tried changing it manually to everything available on my Nook Color, hoping it would stabilize to just one font, ANY font, but there's something in the format that keeps it changing. The differences aren't incredibly dramatic but it's still a little annoying. Publisher, please fix.

    This will wake you up!!

    Pearl comes clean with her own experiences. She helps you face the truth about what losing weight really means. She is daringly truthful, funny, and eloquent. Her credentials are unparalleled, but more importantly she brings great ideas and methodology to her work. Her "ten Pearl principles" are concise, and they don't need to convince you...they will really work. Eating all the time, and sticking to staples that you repeat every day, does take the chance out of the choices we are faced with. Exercise is another critical factor in successfully becoming fit. She addresses it straight on and shows you ways to have fun with it. She gives you five reasons that you won't argue with! She cleverly fractures dieting myths through fairy tale stories that are memorable and stay with you. "America needs to experience a major paradigm shift now." Michelle Pearl couldn't speak more truth. The media hype and economic gain for companies to portray beauty as someone who is thin, or to portray perfection as one who is thin is blown by her mass media myths. Fast weight loss.probably not gonna happen. I liked her reality check. She reminds readers that pills and unbelievable claims. should be treated as just that.unbelievable! Get over it and get to work. Focus on the possible! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gave me new creative ideas to help myself and my patients. Uplifting! I received a complimentary review copy.

    Great motivating book for weight loss

    This is an excellant book. She's very down to earth, reading her story was like listening to a friend. I'm looking forward to rereading this and getting motivated all over again.

    Practical advice for most of us

    Pearl is like most people who struggle with weight issues, she has come to accept and deal with her issues. She found ways to cope with food and excercise. She advises that there is no 'quick fix' - it is a life long project; I think that most people need to figure this out AND figure out for ourselves what works for each of us as individuals.

    Are you one of those people who are constantly wasting money on diet after diet and not losing all that weight, flit from one crash diet to another and have yet to found one that works wonders. With the media constantly shoving skinny women and muscled men down our throats it's no wonder that we are all trying to lose weight , but readers beware- crash dieting is not the way to do it as you end up putting more weight on in the long run.
    Wake Up by Michelle Pearl is the last weight-loss book that you will ever need and have to pick up again. This book tells readers and lets them in on the secret that you don't have to be a skinny rake or a muscled man to be healthy and happier and even by losing a little bit of weight you are on your way to becoming a better you.
    Have you ever wondered what the word "diet" actually means - it's definitely doesn't mean starving yourself thin and crazy. The dictionary defines "diet" as to select or limit the food one eats in order to lose weight. Nowhere does it say to stop eating completely to lose weight.
    What I loved about reading Wake Up , is that Michelle has separated the characters to 2-4 pages so they are easy to read and understand and she has added quotes and anecdotes throughout her book to support what she says .
    My favourite thing about her book is that each of her chapters and steps focuses on what is called "The Pearl Principles" - which is a 10 step programme that also includes a bit of input from our healthy mind not just our bodies.

    The Ten Steps of Pearl Principles:

    Eat all the time
    Con your cravings
    Repeat what you eat
    Forego the fat
    Trash the temptations
    Don't let fast food be your failing
    The Dreaded "E" word
    Throw away your calendars
    Make changes in your two week baby steps
    Stop striving for mass -media promoted body ideals.
    This book is ideal for everyone I believe , it doesn't matter if you are trying to lose weight or not , this book also deals with the issue of that we do not have to be the media's idea of the perfect body shape to be healthy and happy. I highly recommend this book to each and everyone of you readers out there. The foreword of this book was also written by Kai Hibbard , a former contestant of the hit show "The Biggest Loser".

    Good Read

    I personally have never had a problem with being over weight (skinny man) but, I have a daughter who has. This book brings to light some of the things I have heard her stress over most of her life. She is reading the book now and feels like finally, there is someone who knows exactly what she has been going through.

    Misinformed....

    I don't believe Michelle Pearl has ever tried a low-carb diet. Michelle says it causes the person who is eating low carb to be low energy, grumpy, moody. This is so far from the truth! I get a lot more energy eating low-carb than I do while eating the 7 servings she suggested of grains. Think about it, we feed pigs and cows lots of grains to fatten them up faster! No thanks! The balance is way out of whack with her diet. I liked the idea behind her concept, you are never going to look like the fitness people on tv but beyond that I think she is going about the diet all wrong. It may work for her but I don't think it's wise to say everyone should eat that way. And the artificial sweetners? Those will kill Americans faster than eating a little fat.

    Great book

    Got this book for free with my new Nook this x-mas. I really enjoyed reading it. Yes, some of the information is common sense, but there was plenty of stuff that I learned from her. I appreciated her sharing her personal experiences and struggles.

    Some new, some old, info very nicely packaged - it's as if you are talking to your (very knowledgeable) best friend. Ms. Pearl acknowledges that this wont work for everyone, but offers tips to help.

    Great motivational book!

    While the messages may not be new, this book is a pleasure to read. There are some great (basic) tips, and the author's personal experiences make it an interesting read. Thanks for a great book!

    Happily different from other diet books

    After reading this book, I am much more at peace with my middle age spread, and realize the goal of eating is to correctly fuel my body and not strictly for enjoyment. The goal is to be healthy not skinny, and any weight you take off is a big step in that direction. I loved Michelle's Pearls of Wisdom. I didn't care for her many tales of other people's lives-there were just too many. After reading two or three, it got tiresome and I skipped it. I also did not like that she recommended junk food snacks, although in limited portions, with the goal being a sustainable life change that doesn't rob you of your treats but is something you can maintain for the rest of your life. All in all, I'd say this is a must read for anyone who gets discouraged when they don't see immediate results.

    Great book (if you're ready to give up).

    I must admit: I thought it was an interesting read. However, I am not ready to give in to some of the writer's philosophies yet, so I will keep trying to better myself everyday. I am also not delusional, I know I will never look like the fake pictures on magazine covers, but that is not my goal anyway. So I say don't wake up, keep dreaming, then working, on a better you.
