At school Beauty tries to be invisible to avoid the questions and innuendo that have arisen since her mother's death. But when a new student arrives, things begin to change. Luna is a free spirit, confident and exciting. She encourages and challenges Beauty to come out of her shell. Beauty finally admits to her attraction to Poe, a boy who lives a few doors away. Her artistic drive returns.

But as Beauty gains self-confidence, her nightmares become ever more terrifying, filled with dark images of blood and death. Beauty must now struggle to solve the riddle posed by her dreams: who is the Shadow Lady and what is the nature of her curse?

Beauty's life since her mother's "accident" has been spent trying to blend in and avoid the rumors at school. When Luna, a new girl, shows up and is made Beauty's English partner, things begin to turn around for her, but her dreams about the Shadow Lady continue to haunt her. In this updated realistic version of Sleeping Beauty, a regular girl begins to heal after her mother's suicide. A new friend, a potential new love, and some new clothes and attitude all contribute to Beauty's awakening as a stronger young woman. While a little heavy on the similes, Harvey-Fitzhenry's debut novel is well worth a read. Fans of the preRaphaelite movement will appreciate the information given about their favorite authors and artists in the girls' English project and hopefully new fans will be attracted as well. Anyone who loved Katherine Patterson's Bridge to Terabithia or Laurie Halse Anderson's Catalyst should enjoy this book as well.

Beauty feels alienated around her classmates. But so would you if you had to shave your legs at school and cover your scratches because your father was paranoid about sharp objects. Ever since her mother died, Beauty has had to deal with strange changes like being haunted by a Shadow Lady in her dreams. It isn't until Beauty is assigned to work with the odd new girl, Luna, that Beauty begins to find peace in her life. Luna introduces Beauty to the carefree, hippie-like philosophy of the Pre-Raphaelites who created the great works of art and poetry that Beauty admires. By adopting this new outlook, Beauty is able to discover herself and to find a place among her peers. In addition, her newfound confidence aids her to overcome her nightmares and leave behind the horrors of her mother's death.

Gr 7-10-Since her mother's suicide, Beauty, 16, has been visited by the Shadow Lady in her dreams. The teen is withdrawn and desperate to avoid the stares and questions of her classmates. Her well-intentioned father has gone so far as to lock up everything with an edge, even to the point of forbidding the use of plastic utensils, in an attempt to prevent any other "accidents" in the house. Then in walks Luna, a new student who marches to the beat of her own drum. She tells Beauty that girls with weird names need to "stick together." Slowly, Beauty begins to reclaim her life. She finds the confidence to paint again and takes tentative steps toward a relationship with her longtime crush. The allusions to Sleeping Beauty are well done and subtle. As Luna and a handsome male classmate named Poe provide the impetus for this Beauty's awakening, her dream-life begins to take on a darker, more sinister-yet freeing-tone.     I LOVE THIS BOOK

    I couldnt read past the 1st few pages but once i did i couldnt put the book down.. "waking" is one of the BEST books ive ever read.. and tew know its not a vampire book tht really gets me... this book is amazing... i truly love it.. Alyxandra PLEASE write another book...
