Australia's unusual wildlife is showcased in this cheerful picture book. Rhymed verses describe baby animals awakening in their natural habitats: "Wake up, kookaburra,/The sun is sleeping late./Sound your merry laughing call,/My rowdy cheerful mate!" The bird is joined by other daytime critters: joey, fairy penguin, dolphin, rainbow lorikeet, and emu. As the sun sets, the nocturnal young open their eyes: koala, echidna, bilby, platypus, wombat, and sugar glider. Additional facts about these creatures are appended. The acrylic illustrations are colorful and crisp. Matching the text's sweet tone, the illustrations make the spiny echidna as cute and cuddly as the better-known koala. This is a good introduction for budding naturalists with exotic interests.
