Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Borges
This is a winning picture book for young readers who are pirate and dinosaur enthusiasts. It is a fast-paced, suspenseful story about a lively band of male and female pirates who share a common interest in dinosaurs. In an unusual twist of fate, it is Plankton Petunia's and Stinkin' Jim's knowledge about dinosaurs that seals their friendship, despite the fighting of their respective crews. Colorful, cartoon-like illustrations on each page complement the text and make the pirate characters come alive for young readers. The language in this book provides great enjoyment during read-alouds and adds great flavor to the content of the story. For example, Barnacle Barb tells her crew to "swashbuckle yer swords," and Plankton is told to "walk the plank." On the very last page of this book is a listing of pirate translations and pirate facts, such as that the word "mate" means friend, and other words for pirate include "freebooters" and "sea rovers." This text is one in a series of books about Barnacle Barb and her pirate crew. Young readers who enjoy this story will want to read more about these fearsome, yet uniquely appealing characters.
