Best-selling author Heidi Betts is known as a versatile author, who writes what she loves…and makes readers fall in love all over again. Whether she's writing contemporary romance, paranormal, or historical, Heidi Betts never disappoints.

Clayton Walker had been sent to Purgatory…but it felt more like hell. Assigned to solve a string of minor burglaries, the rugged Texas Ranger thought catching the crook would be a walk in the park. Instead he found himself chasing a black-masked bandit with enticing hips and a penchant for helping everyone but herself. And Clay swore he would see justice done, even if he had to shackle the beauty to him for the rest of his life. With quick fingers and a lithe body, Regan Doyle’s nocturnal activities knew no boundaries; decked out in black, the young widow made sure the rich "donated" to the local orphanage - whether they wanted to or not. And the fiery redhead wasn’t about to let a lawman get in her way - even if his broad shoulders and piercing gray eyes were as arresting as the badge pinned to his chest. But caught in a compromising position - one that revealed far more than her colorful undergarments - Regan recognized that the jig was up … for Clay had stolen her heart.

Meet the Author

Bestselling, award-winning author Heidi Betts began her love affair with the romance genre in junior high school, where she used to sneak romance novels into study hall when she should have been doing her homework. It didn’t take long to decide she wanted to write a few romances of her own, so she set out to do just that.

Her first book was released by Dorchester Publishing in 2000, with five more to follow. From there, Heidi moved into the contemporary arena by writing numerous category titles for Silhouette Desire, and recently she signed with St. Martin’s Press to begin writing funny, sexy single titles.

With each new book, Heidi asks herself how she can bring to life endearing heroes and heroines whom readers will believe are meant for each other. A with each new novel to hit the stands, readers and reviewers alike declare she knows how to create a story that sizzles, charms, and delights from the first page to the last. Her first title for Silhouette Desire landed at #1 on the Waldenbooks/Borders Series Romance Bestseller List, where her books have continued to make an appearance ever since.

Heidi loves to read, write, watch movies (and just a little too much television), and surround herself with furry, four-legged friends in her home in the beautiful hills of Central Pennsylvania.

She loves to hear from readers through her website, so please visit her at HeidiBetts.com.

NEEDLESS WORDS

"You could tell them all to go to hell," Clay suggested.

Regan gasped, her mouth falling open in astonishment. "I could never to that."

He took a step toward her, dipping his head a fraction and fixing her with a determined glare. "Sure you could. You just say, 'Go to hell.' Try it."

An appalled puff of air escaped her lungs. "I couldn't."

With her back to the barn wall, Clay took the opportunity to move closer, laying his hands flat against the rough planks on either side of her head.

"What are you doing?" she rasped.

"Maybe you just need the proper motivation," he told her, slanting his head to one side and studying her mouth. "I'm thinking about kissing you, Regan Doyle. And if you don't want that, then you're going to have to tell me, plain and simple, to go to hell."

Her eyes widened and she kept her gaze locked on his lips as they descended toward her own. He stopped a hairbreadth from her mouth, giving her one last chance to deter him.

Her fingers curled into his shirt. Her breathing was shallow.

"Too late," he murmured as he captured her lips with his own.

    Great reading!

Martha Doyle cared very much for her daughter-in-law, Regan. Martha's son had been dead two years and still Regan wore black. Deciding Regan needed a push toward romance, Martha arranged for her nephew to come for a part business and part pleasure visit.

Clayton Walker was a Texas Ranger. The last thing he wanted was to travel to the city of Purgatory. But his orders were clear. Clay was to remain with his Aunt Martha until he apprehended the town's thief. It sounded quick and easy. However, Clay kept being distracted by Regan's presence.

Regan Doyle had loved her husband in her own way. Now a widow, she wanted to keep her independence. She took care of Martha and did all she could for the local orphanage. Regan was NOT happy to see a Texas Ranger come to town though! Regan had been stealing from the rich to keep the orphanage going. Then, during one of her robberies, Regan witnessed a murder!

**** This is like a well written Historical Romance and Mystery book rolled up in one. Lots of romance, many tense situations, and more than one thing going on so the reader never gets bored. I could not help but like the secondary characters almost as much as the main ones. Each character had his or her own personality. Great reading here! ****

Reviewed by Detra Fitch

    humorous historical romance

In Purgatory, Texas, no one locks their doors in spite of the fact that eleven homes have been recently robbed by the Ghost of Ol' Morty Pike. Actually, widow Regan Doyle uses the spectral scenario to ¿encourage¿ donations from the reticent purse strings of the rich in support of the local orphanage.
Texas Ranger Clayton Walker, cousin to Regan¿s late respected spouse, comes to Purgatory to end the crime spree. He almost succeeds with his mission upon initial arrival in town, but the Robin Hood bandit barely eludes him. When Regan arrives at the home she shares with her ailing mother-in-law Martha, she faints at the sight of Clayton also being there. Unbeknownst to either the law enforcement official or the undercover felon, Martha arranged for Clayton to come here because she believes her nephew and her daughter-in-law are perfect for one another. However, neither one wants a relationship though both cannot hide their respective desire for the other.
WALKER¿S WIDOW is an amusing western romance that requires a critical leap of faith to accept Regan¿s successful enterprise into break and enter venture capital funding of the orphanage. Still the lead couple is a captivating duet whose antics to avoid their attraction and to elude identification of her alter ego make for fun reading. The support ensemble brings the era to life while the skirmishes between Clayton and Regan prove quite droll. Heidi Betts provides her audience with a humorous historical romance that is a sure bet to please readers.
Harriet Klausner
