Overview

Once he was known as the angel Remiel, but generations ago, Boston PI Remy Chandler chose to renounce Heaven and live on Earth, where he found a secure place among ordinary humans....

Remy Chandler has found a new love—and his best human friend is reluctantly coming to grips with Remy’s “unusual” abilities. He’s finally reached a kind of peace between his true angelic nature and the human persona he created for himself so long ago.

But Heaven and the Legions of the Fallen still stand on the brink of war. When one of Heaven’s greatest generals is murdered, it falls to Remy to discover who—or what—might be responsible, which could trigger a final conflict that would consume the Earth.

The deeper he digs, the further he goes into a dark world of demonic assassins, secret brothels, and things unsettling even to a being who has lived for eternity. But it is not in his nature—angelic or human—to quit, no matter the personal price....

Library Journal
Remy Chandler, angel in self-imposed exile from Heaven and now a PI in Boston, is piecing his human life back together with a woman he believes he can truly love. When Aszrus, one of Heaven's greatest angelic generals, is found murdered, Remy is ordered to find his murderer, or he will be responsible for bringing about a second round of the war between Heaven and Hell—with the destruction of Earth as a likely piece of collateral damage. Convincingly portraying both his protagonist's heavenly and earthly realities, Sniegoski has created one of urban fantasy's most intriguing and sympathetic heroes. Remy's attempts to reconcile his love for mortals and his angelic powers make him a creature to be both feared and pitied. VERDICT Series fans as well as newcomers will enjoy the latest outing for this unusual detective.
Publishers Weekly
Sniegoski continues to ramp up the stakes in the entertaining fifth hard-boiled adventure (after In the House of the Wicked) featuring private eye Remy Chandler, an angel living on Earth as a human. Thanks to previous events, most of the world is aware that there are supernatural occurrences afoot, but little has changed in everyday life. Remy is enjoying his new relationship with Linda, his first romance since the death of his wife, and repairing his friendship with police officer Steven Mulvehill. But when the angelic general Aszrus is murdered, Remy and his hilarious canine sidekick, Marlowe, are called into action once again. Clues lead to a man named Simeon; resurrected by a young Jesus Christ and doomed to never die, he bitterly envies the mortal humans who will someday die and meet God. Sniegoski throws in handy flashbacks to flesh out both the characters and the present-day mystery, and Remy’s encounter with a corrupt Pope is particularly gripping. There’s a mildly frustrating cliffhanger at the end of the book, but the story still feels complete and entertaining. Agent: Kate Schafer Testerman, kt literary. (Aug.)

The blasted book is a cliff-hanger. It wouldn't irritate me so much if the previous five books in the series weren't stand-alone. It's a good story, typical of the series in the weird slant on religion, interesting characters, and near-Apocalypse plot, but my advice is to wait until the next book in the series comes out to buy this one. You'll save yourself some aggravation.
