Overview

Walking Through Illusion features a series of short stories about biblical people who either knew Jesus or knew of him, and were influenced by him in one way or another. It is about people who lived long before Christianity began. The author believes that we don't take our beliefs with us when we leave here; we take the love we found from having them.

Each chapter focuses on the growth of a particular person and each chapter is complete within itself with a specific theme. The end of each chapter has a worksheet with questions, designed to bring the ideas from the book into the reader's everyday life in a meaningful way.

Author said her book was inspired by a Ouija board - and it brings suicidal thoughts to the reader......

At first I enjoyed it - but dark thoughts started to come flood in after the good thoughts. Read this at your own risk. Did the women in Darfur bring their murderers to them?

This is just another tool by which to judge ourselves, sly and disguised, but still judgmental, like the author herself, whom I wrote to and showed herself to be very egotistical about her books, expecting praise but giving none to other writers. A sure sign of idolatry.

    I Also Recommend:

Excellent read! Review by author of Jump Out of Your Boat

First, make no bones about it, I like this book. One of my all time favorite books is Richard Bach's book "Illusions, the adventures of a reluctant messiah". In many ways for me Betsy O. Thompson's work picks up where Bach left off, his character of Donald is a messiah, Thompson's central character is The Messiah, our Lord Jesus.

In the preface the author makes a case for emotional accountability. We are responsible for what comes back to us. We create our own reality.

The convention that Thompson uses of a dialogue with Jesus conveys a contemporary voice to Christ. Growing up in the church the only voice of Jesus in my mind was that of his teachings in the Gospel. It is a didactic, parental, teachers voice, but not intimate and personal. Thompson's Jesus is natural, conversational, accessible and Human. The book is like watching Jesus on the Charley Rose show.

Founded on the premise that Everything seen is illusionary, everything felt is real, the title of the book is explained early on. Once this context is understood, then what follows is an enlightened story, very entertaining and deeply spiritual.

The book is filled with little proverbs or "truths" including one I firmly believe - DISAPPOINTMENT COMES FROM THINKING
    THAT LIFE SHOULD BE DIFFERENT.
    ENJOYMENT COMES FROM THINKING
THAT LIFE IS WONDERFUL THE WAY IT IS.

The worksheets at the end of each chapter provide a wonderful way for the reader to interact with the ideas of the book. This increases the impact of the experience of reading by almost forcing the reader to think about how they feel about the ideas they just "heard". If you are a Christian you will enjoy this work. If you have a personal relationship with Jesus, you will love it.

    Gelati's Scoop

In an effort to bring different novels to light I have found something a bit different for me, a self- help non-fiction novel that has nothing at all to do with sports. I ran into the author, Betty Otter Thompson , on Goodreads. I personally enjoy Goodreads for many different reasons and suggest that if you enjoy reading you should give that website a try; it is addictive. Anyway, the novel is an excellent exercise for the mind and the soul. Here is a little something from the back cover for you to get the gist of it:
"Walking through Illusion features a series of short stories about biblical people who either knew Jesus or knew of him, and were influenced by him in one way or another. It is about people who lived long before Christianity began. The author believes that we don't take our beliefs with us when we leave here, we take the love we found from having them.
Each chapter focuses on the growth of a particular person and each chapter is complete within itself with a specific theme. The end of each chapter has a worksheet with questions, designed to bring the ideas from the book into the reader's everyday life in a meaningful way."
I am Catholic and found this novel very interesting. Surprise!! Nothing blew up, nobody was shot, there was no grand conspiracy and yet I took this novel chapter by chapter and enjoyed it. There are exercises at the end of each chapter to do and they were interesting and helped to reinforce the material. I know the next question is, was it just like a text book? My perspective, no, it didn't feel that way or else I would have thrown it against the wall and left it there. It was nice enough to talk to me rather than at me, that for me is the big difference. Betsy Otter Thompson found a very nice way to teach me a few things, reinforce a few more, and remind me other things I should have retained from other things I was taught and read. Preachy no, Teachy, yes, I can live with that.
I am glad I got the opportunity to not only read this but to share it with my wife and discuss it with her. I don't get that chance to often. I guess in trade now I will have to jump into a Wanda Brunstetter novel and read about an Amish family. Maybe there is a novel about the Amish Outlaws out there I can share, Brother "Big Daddy Abel" are you reading this, help.

    more from this reviewer

    Enjoy this Walk

This is unlike any other book I've read about Jesus. Most of them just talk about Jesus. This one makes me feel like I am part of an interview with Jesus the man, and all the biblical people who actually 'knew Him' and the affect He had on their lives and how they might have reacted to His choices. The end of each chapter has a useful Q and A sheet. These were very useful - they helped me to change my own outlook by incorporating meaningful ideas from each of its short stories, and it's hard to find the kind of honesty that is exhibited by this author where she shares how her own life has also been greatly influenced by the book's messages. This book can help you understand your own spirituality and question your own perspective on life .This book nudged me along to make some positive changes in my own life.. A must-read for anyone who has questions about their own faith and beliefs and the part the church plays today in their life.
