Overview

The collected works of Britain’s most wanted artist.

Artistic genius, political activist, painter and decorator, mythic legend or notorious graffiti artist? The work of Banksy is unmistakable, except maybe when it’s squatting in the Tate or New York’s Metropolitan Museum. Banksy is responsible for decorating the streets, walls, bridges and zoos of towns and cities throughout the world.
Witty and subversive, his stencils show monkeys with weapons of mass destruction, policeman with smiley faces, rats with drills and umbrellas. His statements, incitements, ironies and epigrams are by turns intelligent and cheeky comments on everything from the monarchy and capitalism to the war in Iraq and farm animals.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“People look at an oil painting and admire the use of brushstrokes to convey meaning. People look at a graffiti painting and admire the use of a drainpipe to gain access.”
–Banksy

“Since spotting my first few Banksies I have been desperately seeking out more. They make me smile and feel optimistic about the possibilities of shared dreams and common ownership.”
–Simon Hattenstone, Guardian

    A reviewer

Realy creative and inspiring. Even if you don't understand some of the art, it stirs you up in a delightful way!

    Simply amazing

Banksy has all the answers for the bureaucrats. The placement of his 'art' is extremely thought provoking. The accompanying titles and quotes are equally stimulating - sometimes very funny and sometimes very serious, but always making you think 'why didn't I think of that' or 'I know just what you mean'. The humour can be nothing but British, there is no other like it. If you want something to stimulate your mind and make you do a double take, you must check out this 'wall art' book. This is one of the best books I've 'read' in a long time. Can't wait for more books like this.

    One of the Best

While his identity might have been revealed recently, this book still showcases the social relevance of Banksy. Part bio, part commentary, and part portfolio, Wall and Piece serves as a great representation of the art Banksy creates and its message.Sometimes humorous; sometimes political; and always relevant, it amazes me how much Banksy has done and where he's done it. While some call him a nuisance and a criminal, I see him as an artist. This book shows some of his famous graffiti, as well as several of the paintings he has slipped into famous art museums. He's painted on everything from walls to animals and created several sculptures; all with a message and all done guerilla style. Aside from the photgraphs in the book, Banksy provides commentary, tips, and biographical information throughout as well.No matter what you label Banksy, Wall and Piece is a great showcase of his art (or whatever negative thing you want to call it).

    Banksy is Fantastic

A collection of several booklets previously impossible to get. Banksy is one of our cultural treasures, even if what he does is considered illegal and distructive by some. His works transcend their medium and his social and political overtones are alternately subtle and hilarious. This is one to keep on the shelf at home.

    We need art like this!

Wall and Piece gives you a peak into this elusive artist. Banksy believes art should be for everyone and not just the elite few. Whether it's writing on public walls or sneaking art into museums. He pokes fun at social issues but also makes you think about what's going in the world beyond your backyard without preaching it to the audience.

    An Enigma Showcased

Many people in England and Australia are familiar with the works of the stencil artist Banksy, though to this day only a handful of people know who he really is. Although his style is now copied worldwide, this book shows many of the images that first brought this thought provoking artist to our attention. While he may choose to use urban structures as his canvas, this is not to be confused with graffiti. Not the mindless "tagging" or "paint bombing" that is an urban blight. This is an evolved art form with a statement much more profound than just "I was here". Politics, environment, media, social issues, race, gender and sexuality, these are this ideas Banksy wants you to think about. His message is serious but often veiled in biting humor. And while done in less than 4 minutes under cover of darkness, the works draw attention to ideas that need to be said out loud. And of course, some are done just for pure fun. A very interesting look at the leader in an art form I hope becomes more acceptable than its neanderthal relations.

    Entertaining

I bought this for my husband. He's been a Banksy fan for years. This book was great because it's funny and entertaining. Anyone can pick it up and find Banksy's work humerous or at least interesting.

    good stuff!

Its hard for me to find a good art book, usually they strike me as boring. But while skimming through this one I saw Mona Lisa with a rocket launcher and was instantly hooked! Banksy is a good writer too, he's very funny and undeniably British! And the pictures never get boring, you can pick this book up after reading it everyday and it will still be as entertaining as the first time! =]
