Description: This is the 10th edition of a compendium of laboratory testing that is true to its subtitle, Pathways to Arriving at a Clinical Diagnosis. The previous edition was published in 2011.
Purpose: It is intended as a guide to the most efficient use of clinical laboratory testing.
Audience: The audience includes primary care physicians, subspecialists, allied health professionals (students or in practice) such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants, and medical and nursing students.
Features: This edition continues the excellence of previous editions. New to the 10th edition is the reordering of the contents from laboratory testing in the context of disease states to separate sections for disease states versus laboratory tests. There are substantial cross-references between major sections, and supposedly the online version is much more facile in this via hyperlinks. (Alas, I was unable to review the online version because my browser needed to be updated to do so and I don't have administrator rights to my work PC to do this.) All sections follow a standard format. The disease states sections include information on additional diagnostic testing (e.g., imaging) and many very useful diagnostic algorithms. The laboratory testing section is in alphabetical order, with a completely separate section for infectious disease assays. Although only three colors are used (white, dark blue, light blue) in tables, algorithms, section breaks, etc., they are used most effectively A few issues. This book was not intended to be an exhaustive reference for all laboratory testing or laboratory medicine concerns (e.g., clinical utility) so don't expect detailed, in-depth analysis of each specific test. In this regard, it is perfect for those wanting a quick overview of a disease and recommended testing. There is a big glitch in the header for the general laboratory test section. From the beginning of the section, the header changes with each page and reflects the tests discussed on that page. Then the header remains "Coombs antiglobulin test" from pp. 885-1091, ending with prealbumin. This same glitch reappears on pp. 1095-1201 when "prenatal diagnostic screening" accompanies the rest of the alphabetical test listing, ending with zinc. One homophone to be corrected: the use of "humeral" instead of "humoral" in the legend to figure 7-1. In measuring this edition against the two previous ones, it's apparent each edition has gotten progressively thicker by one-third. This edition weighs in at a hefty 1,390 pages and 1.5 inches thick. As a paperback with anticipated heavy use (because it is so useful), expect the spine to disintegrate more quickly than previous editions.
Assessment: This edition continues its tradition of excellence. Get it if you want a quick reference for medical diagnosis and cost-effective testing. Treat it carefully to maximize its predictably limited lifespan.
