Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: James Goodwin, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This book is a comprehensive exposition on inflammatory and infectious diseases that cause neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations. The last edition was published in 1969.
Purpose: The purpose of this volume is to update information on infectious and inflammatory diseases to include new serologic, molecular, biologic, and other modern techniques. These are indeed worthy objectives because many of these techniques were not in use and some of the infectious diseases covered here did not exist at the time the last edition was published. This book meets these objectives admirably.
Audience: The book is written primarily for physicians and medical researchers, especially those who deal with neurologic diseases that affect visual, ocular motor, or pupil function. These include neuro-ophthalmologists, ophthalmologists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons. The author is an eminent authority in the field of neuro-ophthalmology.
Features: This book includes a remarkable array of illustrations, each with something important to touch the reader. All are black-and-white, but they have been selected so this format is generally appropriate. The problem of having only volume-specific indexes has been rectified by the inclusion of a comprehensive index at the end of this volume. The overall appearance is excellent.
Assessment: The original editions of this book were outstanding among medical texts in offering a comprehensive overview of the subject with sufficient detail in each section and a coherence of approach that derived from the fact that the entire book was written by two authors. This edition has upheld the tradition most admirably in the hands of a single masterful author whose style is concise, clear, and fluid. The breadth of information in theses volumes is not available in any other single source. These volumes are a must for nearly all medical libraries, medical bookstores, and for many practitioners and researchers in the neurological sciences.
