Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
This biography covers Disney’s life beginning with his childhood, and it describes his many accomplishments in detail. An introduction tells about his creation of animation and the Disneyland parks. Several pages of “People You Will Meet” include names, illustrations, and their relationship to Disney. There is a timeline of events from 1834 (his great-grandfather’s arrival to America from Ireland) to Disney’s death in 1966. Photographs and illustrations including posters of the first cartoons are shown throughout the book. His childhood, jobs, interests, marriage, and the invention of Mickey Mouse are described in the nine chapters. There is a photo of the original Mouseketeers from the Mickey Mouse Club variety show on television and other photos of his original cartoons. How he was inspired and the creation of the Disneyland parks is discussed. Several pages list “Ten things you should know about Walt Disney” followed by “Ten more things that are pretty cool to know.” There is a table of contents, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index. There are descriptions and locations of Disney places to visit. Part of the “I Am” series, this thorough biography should be interesting for independent readers and would be a good source for research purposes in schools and libraries. Reviewer: Vicki Foote; Ages 9 to 12.
