All of the tunes created by Harvey, Spirito, and Scharin of Rex on Waltz are in the style of, you guessed it, a waltz in 3/4 time. A country flavor exists on this record, along with added textures of strings and horns, which are a wonderful element to Waltz. "Willow Garden" is a wonderful traditional tune that Chris Moore taught the band. It incorporates an old-time feel with a banjo introduction, slide guitar, and passionate wailing vocals washed out by an old microphone or effect in a country-blues style. "Sorry" uses an accordion that makes you want to weep. Chord progression in accordance with the 3/4 time signature moves this piece along. Rex is very successful with great instrumental breaks that accentuate the lead lines without having to take any solos. A melancholy flair exists throughout Waltz. The packing of the record is adorned with old etchings and book bound on the spine. Nothing on this record is overly flourished. Rex places their instruments just right.
