Children's Literature
Another offering in the "Native Americans" series is this study of the Wampanoag, a tribe whose original territory was in what later became southern Massachusetts and eastern Rhode Island. It was these people who greeted the Pilgrims who arrived in Massachusetts in 1621. The short, simple chapters cover the nature of Wampanoag society, their foods, homes, clothing, crafts, family, myths, and war. Contact with the Europeans led to a sharp reduction in population and traditional culture, but the descendants of the tribe live on today. All of this is presented in a way that should be an easy and interesting read for kids in the eight-to-ten year age range. The illustrations are good visual supplements to the text and help to bring the traditional culture to life. Thirty-two pages of text end with a glossary, web sites, and an index. A worthwhile addition to the children's literature on eastern Native American tribes. 2004, ABDO Publishing Company, Ages 8 to 10.

    Great Educational Children's Book!

This book is well written and illustrated and is appropriate for an introduction to many aspects of Wampanoag history and social life.
