All Music Guide - Alex Henderson
When reviewers heard teen-aged Jonny Lang's debut album of 1997, Lie to Me, many of them commented on how mature the blues singer/guitarist sounded for his age. Similarly, Lang's second album, Wander This World, often sounds like it could have been the work of a man of 30. With David Z. known for his work with Prince producing, the Midwesterner delivers an exciting sophomore effort that has as much to do with soul, funk, and rock as it does with actual blues. Far from a purist, Lang takes an approach that is best described as Albert Collins, B.B. King, and Luther Allison by way of Otis Redding, Stax Records, and Eric Clapton. Far from a purist, Lang takes an approach that is best described as Albert Collins, B.B. King, and Luther Allison by way of Otis Redding, Stax Records, and Eric Clapton. While "Angel of Mercy" and the moody "Cherry Red Wine" demonstrate his mastery of the 12-bar format, most of the other selections aren't actual 12-bar blues, but rather Southern-style soul, funk, or rock with a wealth of blues feeling. Lovers of 1960s Memphis soul should appreciate "Walking Away" and "Second Guessing," while "The Levee" and "Still Rainin'" have more of a rock orientation. The haunting title song finds Lang singing a little too convincingly about loneliness -- even though Lang himself didn't actually write the lyrics -- hearing an adolescent sounding so world-weary and isolated is rather disconcerting. There's nothing even remotely bubblegum about this excellent CD, which proves that Lang's supporters had every right to be enthusiastic.

    I Also Recommend:

    WOW!

Jonny Lang displays unrivaled talent in this exceptional collection of songs. It is the CD that you will keep singing in your head and go back to play for years to come. A friend loaned me his copy, and when I had to give it back I immediately ordered myself one because I knew I couldn't be without it. The only music I have ever heard that touched me more than this CD was Jonny live in concert.

    Not terribly original

In my opinion, this CD doesn't quite live up to the hype. Lang sounds a lot like Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt, which isn't a bad thing, but I was hoping for something a little more original. The CD is also a bit too pop-ish for me.

JONNY LANG HAS GOT SOUL!!! :)

Wow! Where to begin! This album really speaks to me. I wasn't a big fan, then I saw Jonny in concert and that changed my mind. I now own this album and listen to it almost non-stop! It has great lyrics that I think everyone can relate to. There is a song for almost every mood you could ever be in! I love this album, and I think it is essential for any blues fan!

    Jonny Lang is absolutely wonderful

I first heard Jonny Lang when my friend got the c.d. At fist I was a little doubtful because I haven't liked to many blues artist, but after I heard him sing. I was so amazed. I think he is a very talented artist expecially for his age. I hope he stays around a lot longer.
