Overview

These two classic works capture the tide of world events even as they unfold the compelling tale of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

The multimillion-copy bestsellers that capture all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of the Second World War — and that constitute Wouk's crowning achievement — are available for the first time in trade paperback.

Pulitzer Prize-winner Wouk's classic, bestselling epic of an American family during World War II. "The reader is going to be caught up in the excitement and sheer kinetic force of this powerful story . . . relive a period of history . . . and come away richer for the memories."--James A. Michener. A miniseries based on this book was an ABC Television Event of the Century. Reissue.

    Wow! What a read!

What a remarkable story. I read both the Winds of War and War and Remembrance. It was just fascinating. I didn't want it to end. You get lost in the story of the Henry family as they traverse all the events of WWII. There is romantic tension, adventure, thrills and more. The vivid descriptions of the concentration camps and what happened there made my hair stand up and saddened me very much. There was also a tremendous amount of factual information of real events that happened in WWII. So in that sense it was very educational. It was reminiscent of Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth and World without End in the way that it grabbed you and sucked you in to the story. I highly recommend both of these novels.

    A great history lesson

This book is the follow up to Winds of War. Both are available on DVD's. The lessons of WW II should never be forgot. Read the book or watch the DVD

And you thought 'The Winds of War' was great...

The second half of Herman Wouk's World War II epic picks up literally where ''The Winds of War'' left off, and follows its enormous cast of characters as they continue to bounce around the globe, emotionally connecting readers to the losses and triumphs of the war in the Pacific and European theaters, and the horrors of the Holocaust. Once again, Wouk's writing is a tour de force, combining enormous amounts of historical research with a flair for character. As with ''Winds,'' Wouk's character of the fictional German general Armin von Roon is an amazing achievement, as Wouk inhabits the voice and the thoughts of the military leadership of our wartime enemies. Yet he manages to eclipse Roon with the transformation of Aaron Jastrow from the obstinate waffler of ''Winds'' to a deeply moving and inspiring character as his Holocaust experience drives him to re-embrace his religious roots. I know it's a cliche, but you REALLY must read this book.

    Continuing Epic

This novel is even better than "Winds of War", which in itself is a triumph. The Henrys provide a vibrant and accessible entry into the complex and far-flung second World War. A book I have read so many times the spine is broken. Masterpiece.

Excellent read, even better than The Winds

at the end of the winds of war, i was feeling that it was a bit too long winded and that i wasn't sure if i would read War and Remembrance, but i am SOOOOO GLAD that i did. It is just so interesting, how you feel as if you know these characters inside and out, how you feel for them and worry about them and want to know everything about them. I feel this one moves faster than the first one (which i did, in fact enjoy very much) which makes it a better read overall.

One of the most startling epics to come out of WWII.

This series is simply amazing. I am a big reader, but I almost never read more than 100 pages a day, which I did for this phenomenal book. The characters catch you and make you care and tie you to the events of that terrible and enlightening era. For insight into military mistakes and strokes of brilliance, for a glimpse into the minds of the men that made the world turn at that time, and for a look into the heartbreakingly surreal world of the 'territorial solution,' the Nazi extermination camps, one need look no further than here. If you care at all about this war that still affects our lives today, read this epic.

    best series ive ever read

Herman Wouk is a genius. You couldn't have taught me more about the history of WWII if you tried; how everyday people became heroes, the motivations and actions of people of that time period manifested through characters so real I missed them after I finished the books. Read Winds of War first.

    I will always remember

I read this book when I was a freshman in high school (1986), and I still think about this book often. I have gone back many, many times to read an excerpt. It remains one of my favorite books of all time.

The above rating is for the nook book edition and applies only to the manuscript. The manuscript contains misspellings throughout the book. For the most part I am able to guess the correct word, but there are multiple locations where I am not. The convenience of not lugging around a 1300 page novel is great, but it would be even greater to have the manuscript typed correctly. If it were possible, I would return the ebook and buy the hardcopy.

    Favorite book

I am a tremendous reader and this is my all time favorite book. This book gave me a great respect for history in general and a particular interest in World War II. I wanted to jump in the story and be a part of the Henry family.

    even better

it's not often that a sequel surpasses the original, but war and remembrance not only does that it completes the story started in the winds of war. neither book is complete without the other while they can stand alone. war and remembrance, albeit a large book tells a large story and before the reader knows it they are at the end. it's more than a good read - it should be mandatory reads in history classes.

    Search for Wouk Pseudonym

Thoroughly enjoyed War and Remembrance, Winds of War, and Don't Stop the Carnival. I am looking for a copy of Reasonable War; I think it also was written by Herman Wouk under a pseudonym. Would appreciate help in locating this book. Thanks.
