Art covers pottery, sculpture, painting, mosaics, homes, tombs and temples, plus coins and jewelry. City States reviews government, commerce, sports, medicine, childhood and education, women and domestic life, food, clothing, and slavery; absent are telling time and personal names. Mythology introduces major gods and goddesses and relates stories of the Trojan War, Odysseus, Heracles, and great quests; however, it omits specific myths involving Zeus, Aphrodite, Apollo, and others and also ignores satyrs, fauns, centaurs, the Eleusinian mysteries and Elysian fields, nectar and ambrosia, Prometheus, Pandora, and numerous other figures. War , in addition to general descriptions of fighting, has chapters on the Persian and Peloponnesian wars and Alexander the Great. Each volume includes pronunciations and numerous color illustrations (many of which depict nudes). The books are often surprisingly incomplete compared to shorter, more lavishly illustrated titles. They are also less interesting, clear, or direct. This is largely due to poor writing and severe overuse of the passive tense (Mythology is particularly awkward and repetitious). Glossary definitions are highly abbreviated; indexes are incomplete; maps (absent in Art for no apparent reason) are tiny and hard to read, and omit numerous places referred to in the texts. Don Nardo's The Greenhaven Encyclopedia of Greek and Roman Mythology (Gale, 2002) is a standard on that topic. For general sources, use Sean Sheehan's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ancient Greece (Getty, 2002); Anton Powell's Ancient Greece (Facts On File, 2003); Anne Pearson's Ancient Greece(DK, 2004); and/or Allison Lassieur's The Ancient Greeks (Watts, 2004).-Ann W.
