Based on a true account of a football game played between the German and English troops in no-man's land on Christmas Day in 1914 during World War I, this book tells the story of four young men who have recently enlisted and have found that war is not as glamorous as they had once thought. The young men get to realize their dream of playing football for England when the English and German sides hold a ceasefire on Christmas Day and they play a friendly game against one another. This special new edition with beautiful color artwork is a touching and emotive story for children and adults to treasure.

During World War I, four English friends and their comrades find temporary relief from the brutal and seemingly endless struggle in the trenches when, on an extraordinary Christmas Day, they celebrate the holiday with their German enemies.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Silverman
Recently there have been several books published that look like picture books. It is only when the books are opened that the adult reader realizes that they are not for young children. World War I was so long ago that, except for the dates, most of us know very little about it. But an entire generation of Britons was decimated. Those who survived physically bore psychological scars that affected the generations after them. The pictures of British and American posters calling on young men to join the Armed Forces are marvelous. The devil-may-care attitude of the young men who go off to fight in France is heartbreaking, because we know that they will never come home. The final pictures, first of an empty field spotted with blood and then of the same field covered in poppies, are difficult to look at. Recommended, with caution, for parents first, and only after discussion, for older-than-picture-book-aged children.
From the Publisher

"Crammed with concrete details and permeated with emotion. . . . Artwork shimmers with the luster of memory and fellow-feeling; a gentle gleam rises even from military hardware, which serves to both soften and highlight the horror of war. History springs to life in this admirable work." â€”Publishers Weekly

"A masterpiece." â€”Times Literary Supplement
