  • Wernher von Braun, 1912–1977, German rocket scientist One-time Nazi and SS officer, von Braun surrendered to the U.S. in 1945—he then went on to serve as director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and became the chief architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle, the super booster that thrust Apollo toward the Moon.
