Here are more than 300 instant portraits (complete with dimensions, weight, power plant, performance, armament) of the most famous as well as lesser-known American fighters, bombers, transports, flying boats, trainers, helicopters, and reconnaissance aircraft. Each entry includes a photograph of the warplane, service dates, manufacturer, records set, engineering and performance history, technical innovations, and even operational problems. Warbirds pays special attention to the aircraft of America's Golden Age, 1919-1939, and the breakthrough technological developments of that era. To help enthusiasts and researchers, the guide cites the very latest books and periodical literature in its two extensive bibliographies. It also lists aviation museums, airplane magazines, and sources of photographs.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This reference work by aviation author Fredriksen aims to be an introductory source to the U.S. military aviation inventory from its modest beginnings in World War I through the present day's vast technological astonishments. Each of the aircraft selected from the scores of possible examples is then examined in a short history, with mention of its contribution to the military picture, some details on its construction and numbers, and other selected facts. A single photo is included, with technical specifications. The format is adequate to the initial task, though anything beyond basic interest has to be found in the voluminous cross-referenced suggested reading appendixes. Nevertheless, having singled out the "casual user" and with the goal of being "exacting in scope without being burdensome in detail," this single volume is right on target. With its extensive source lists, it should get considerable reference traffic.--Mel D. Lane, Sacramento, CA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
Presents a compilation of the major US warplanes, including many lesser-known types, in nontechnical but exacting detail. Includes those designed for military use and those designed for civilian use that were pressed into service during wartime. Experimental prototypes that were not deployed are omitted in the interest of space. Contents are arranged alphabetically by manufacturer, then by name or designation. Each entry includes a b&w photograph and a succinct account of the craft, including technical specifications, contextual issues, and other details. Includes extensive, current bibliographic listings.
