The fifth installment of Scott's fantastic series of mythological and historical inter-fusion could not have come with a better background color for the cover, GOLD! Because that's what this book is! This extremely fast paced title will have you flipping page after page, and before you know it you've polished off the whole thing. And isn't that what a good book is all about? Keeping your hands glued to the covers?
Continuing the story of teenagers Josh and Sophie Newman, The Warlock follows the siblings as their paths part ways and they find themselves further and further from each other. Nicholas and Perrenelle Flamel have the odds stacked against them, as they are literally fighting for their lives. The hodgepodge grouping that has stepped back in time to the island nation of Danu Talis, led by the mysterious hook-handed figure of Death, battles against insurmountable foes. The God of War Mars Ultor is awakened, Billy the Kid and Machiavelli struggle with releasing the cache of monsters, Dee and Dare continue to corrupt Josh, and Sophie finds out just who her Aunt Agnes really is!
Early in the book we find the ever confusing motives of the Witch of Endor uttering a single line that is true to it's core, "this world is in need of a warlock"! Indeed we were, Mr. Scott... Indeed we were!

I read the first book of the series last year. I was hooked I am not normally a young adult books but I was hooked on it. Read all the proceeding novels and noticed that the Author wrote a shot story to keep people from going frantic due to the delay of this book.
The book is going to be awesome and I cant wait. My only complaint will be I seriously hope that they DON'T MAKE A MOVIE SERIES on it. That will kill the book series and people just don't understand why books are better than movies now a days.
only giving this book 3 stars for now since I have not read it as of yet

The other books in this series were so good I can't hardly wait til this one comes out. It sounds like the whole book is about sophie though. What's up with that?

I've had people say to me that they didn't like The secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel Series by Michael Scott. And while I agree that some of the earlier books in the series can get dull, The Warlock just completely blew me away. Some people have complained about there being three-four different points of view, but I find it extremely exciting to see so many different characters' plot lines unfold. This book, like the other books in the series, contains, in my opinion, a very interesting mixture of history and true events in it. Not only does Michael Scott use real people from history, for example, Niccolo Machiavelli, he also includes other history, like the flying vimanas. He also gives a great explanation about the flying vimanas and about the history of flying machines in the back of the book. Some people don't like cliffhangers, but I personally love a good cliffhanger. And Scott did not disappoint. The cliffhanger he left us left me literally gasping aloud when I read. In some cases you are able to easily guess what happens at the end of a book. The ending of The Warlock, however, was in my opinion a complete surprise. I would never have guessed at it in a million years. My only complaint about this book is that the excerpt of the next book was to short, because I really just can not wait until The Enchantress comes out.

The first three books really were so strongly written. I spent three years anticipating the release of book after book from Mr. Scott. Even the fourth book, The Necromancer, was rather enjoyable but I felt that it became a bit tangential. Certain things took a turn in a different direction than I thought the series would go. However, The Warlock was the first of these novels to really lose me. Eventhough I was able to speed through this book, a couple of things became alarmingly obvious. Firstly, The Warlock is not much more than a bit of filler material and it took me nowhere special. The book, which only took place over one day in the story of Nicholas Flamel, was not very eventful. Sure, a couple of things happened, but I think it was really a strike out when it comes to the plot on this one. It was a lot of back story and time travelling and I don't really understand why it was all necessary. What happened to the massive battles a quarter of the way into the story? Why was there no risk with this novel? Secondly, Michael Scott's writing style really became a bit too repetitive. He spent way too much time talking about the same things. At this point you don't need to reference the concept of auras once every chapter...we get it, we've already read four of these books. It even became annoying seeing him use some of the same writing conventions from a grammar standpoint, but maybe I'm being picky. Lastly, why is the story not about Nicholas Flamel anymore?? He may not be the strongest character I've ever read about, but this book was akin to JK Rowling writing a Harry Potter book and then making it predominantly about Ron and Hermione while Harry Potter is taking a nap for 300 pages. So, overall I was very disappointed by this effort of Mr. Scott. Some character names became really hard to pronounce. There was a lot of random comic relief that seemed rather forced and awkward. And to be perfectly honest, he lost me when it came to the flying saucers. For me, The Warlock was just too much of a departure from the plot line that was established in the first three books of the series. Ultimately, it was fun to read because I enjoy these Nicholas Flamel books, but I can't help but wonder if this one would have been better if Michael Scott had taken more than a year to write it.

While I was worried about the time traveling aspect, the two timelines throughout the book were very easy to follow and distinguish from one another. The action for the group sent to the far distant past (and seemingly far away world of Danu Talis) was non-stop. The current timeline, like in the previous installments, jumps form scene to scene based on certain groupings of characters. This too is action packed and full of surprises. Again we get lots of information about characters new and old.
It can feel, from time to time, like you need two charts to help keep track of everything: (1) a family tree to see who is related to each other and how; and (2) a chart to see who is on which side, moment to moment. There are folks flipping sides all over the place. Folks siding with the dark elders revolt and folks on the side of the Flamels revolt as well. It will be interesting to see where everyone ends up in the last book. One twist to confuse it all is revealed on the last page. In my head, I said "what the..? And then I can't believe I was right because I predicted it1" (So you know it's a good one!)
We get an excellent explanation of magic from the Earth Magic teacher. And we get two very different "teachings". Both are interesting, but nothing like what we've seen before. We learn more about how one's aura is involved and that both twins are more capable then realized when it comes to the magic that we know. We learn lots of things about the characters and relationships. Some, I was hoping for, some was speculated on, and some questions are still hanging out there (of course, otherwise, what use would the last book be?).
There were funny moments, although they were less often then in previous books. It seems this is likely due to that fact that we are getting seriously close to the end of the story and the stakes have risen. The time the Flamels have left is even less and the world still needs to be saved.
The dialogue and the interaction between the characters is wonderful. The author continues to amaze me with his ability to paint the picture of the scene in my mind. The addition of details such as the color of character's eyes, the clothes they are wearing, and the scents of their auras give enough details to be so very vivid in my mind, yet the details don't overpower the story line, nor do they add unnecessary length to the book. It is the perfect balance, so that I can get that image and still be moving right along with the action.
I think given the events the title "The Warlock" is a little misleading, since **spoiler alert** there are a number of them. But it was wonderful to see who aligned themselves on the side of the humani and who didn't once most of the dust settled.
We are introduced to new monsters, new Elders, new magic, flying saucers (yep!!!) and lots of history on many of the characters. Abraham, Agnes, Hel, Odin, Prometheus, Mars, Scatty, are all seen here; that sneaky author with some of these connections! Numerous times I had to stop and digest what I read (in a good way). I was pleasantly surprised that I had guessed a few things (including the "big reveal" at the end - I honestly saw that coming! Yippeeeee for me! Although, I chalk it up to dumb luck since I guessed so many things wrong too!) and totally not surprised by how utterly wrong I was abut others.
I still have so many questions. but it is a wonderful book and I can't wait for the next.

I thought The Warlock was well written and provided a great twist at the end that I did not see coming! The characters are well rounded and the scenes add some interesting history notes, as well. I would highly recommend this entire series.

This book was an amazing continuation of the magical Nicholas Flamel series. This book has left me hanging for the Enchantress to come out. This is a fascinating series that I recommend you read.

this series is the best ive waited a year 4 this it better hurry up i want it so much that im gonna have to read it at midnight on may 24th the second it comes out! yet i kinda wanna stop reading the series for like 5 years so that i can read like 6 books before having to wait. Cant wait any longer or im gonna die of a rare disease called icannotwaitanymoreidus. its so frustrating!
