In this fifth installment of the Nicholas Flamel series, twins Sophie and Josh are pitted against each other in an epic struggle between the forces of good and evil. At stake is the future of the human race. Josh has gone over to the dark side and is now in thrall to infamous villain Dr. John Dee and his accomplice, the seductive Virginia Dare. Sophie continues to be loyal to the Alchemyst, Nicholas Flamel, but she is uneasy at how she is now forced to confront her beloved twin brother. The novel also takes us back in time to the lost city of Atlantis, Danu Talis, where the beginning of the conflict began. That is where the forces of good must destroy Danu Talis, preventing the subsequent events that lead inexorably to the end of the planet. Scott has infused new vigor into this installment of his popular adventure series. The conflict between the twins adds tension to an action-packed plot. As always, the host of mythological creatures is somewhat dizzying, but they add to the fun and excitement of the plot. The time-travel subplot taking the characters back to Atlantis is skillfully done and highly enjoyable. Because of the conflict between the twins, these characters seem more developed than in previous installments. The short and highly descriptive sentences propel the reader and complement the rip-roaring pace of the plot. Teens who already enjoy this series will be delighted with this latest installment. Pair this series with Rick Riordan's highly popular mythological fantasy novels. Reviewer: Jan Chapman
Children's Literature - Cynthia Levinson
This cross-cultural, cross-time period, cross-species, cross-geography, cross-genre sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, adventure myth opens with a diary entry written by Perenelle Flamel, Sorceress in a Shadowrealm near San Francisco and almost-widow of Nicholas, an alchemist. The entry summarizes the state that the world has fallen into as of the beginning of this fifth in the series of "Nicholas Flamel" tales. Dr. John Dee and his accomplice, Virginia Dare, have turned teenager Josh Newman into a necromancer, pitting him against his twin, Sophie, who remains loyal to the dying Flamel. Following a host of fast-paced adventures that swing between two time periods and multiple worlds, the characters—human (for instance, Shakespeare), mythological (including Prometheus), and fantastical—return to Danu Talis, the lost city of Atlantis, where the stories began and where good and evil combat to save or destroy the planet. With the help of Niten, Sophie must find an Immortal to teach her Earth Magic. Meanwhile, Josh, unbeknownst to Dee, holds the final two pages of the Codex, which would give Dee the power to overthrow the Elders. Sophie ultimately finds her teacher in a satisfyingly ordinary yet unexpected place. Readers who enjoy this melange of genres and who have read the previous novels will rejoice in this breathlessly energetic novel. Although the scenes and characters are vividly described, readers unfamiliar with the series will have trouble catching up in this creative and complex world. Reviewer: Cynthia Levinson
