PreS-K-- Animal friends Badger and Rabbit play together in the summer and delight in the best of the season. But despite the pleasures that summer brings, Rabbit comments that she prefers `` warm in winter,'' which totally baffles Badger. When winter arrives, Badger makes her way to Rabbit's house, feeling the bitter cold in a sweeping snow storm. It is only when she is safe and snug in her friend's house, sipping carrot soup by a blazing hearth, that she appreciates how cozy winter can be. They enjoy the warmth of their friendship, even when it's cold outside. Deraney has created interesting, brightly patterned, pencil and watercolor illustrations which jut out of their rectangular borders. Some sweep across two pages as in the windy snow scenes. The snow looks more like milky rain, but there is a true feeling of the harsh elements of the storm. The narration is descriptive, the dialogue is pithy, and the contrasts of seasons are skillfully presented. A pleasant outlook on the year-round pleasures shared by two friends. --Marianne Pilla, Upper Dublin Public Library, Dresher, PA
