Overview

At some points, this final disc in the three-part series -- a collection of heady Warp remixes by the hippest of the hip in late '90s electronica -- gets a little too intense. But that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of astonishing music thrown in with the frequency tweaks and blurt blasts. Richard Devine's remix of Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" takes the Twin's blender-beats and punkish noise to a new level of thrilling harshness, while Jim O'Rourke and Plaid both make gorgeous fractal animation out of Autechre's already intricate sound collages. Think of these remixes as the result of the sons and daughters of bleeptronica steering the sound they love in new directions -- just like the original Warp artists who came before them. The next ten years couldn't look brighter. Warp speed ahead!

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - John Bush
The final volume in Warp Records' ten-year anniversary celebration looks at the immense influence the label has had on experimental and electronic music the world over. An assortment of indie rock and electronic figures take on their favorites from the label's surprisingly large back catalog, beginning with Pram's garage rock rendering of LFO's "Simon From Sydney" and continuing on through Stereolab's shuffling remake of "Kid for Today" by Boards of Canada, Jim O'Rourke's version of "Characi" by Autechre, Tortoise-frontman John McEntire's reworking of "Playtime" by Nightmares on Wax, and Spiritualized's pure-phased wave-of-sound redux of "Tied Up" by LFO. There are plenty of remixes by electronic artists though, and a few by Warp acts themselves (Autechre, Plaid, Mira Calix, Jimi Tenor, Plone). Always a forward-thinking label, Warp also showcases some newer names in the electronic world. The remixes by new signings (as of 1999) Isan and Four Tet are among the best of the two-disc set. And the new wave of stateside neo-electro producers Push Button Objects and Richard Devine pump up the beats on their contributions, Boards of Canada's "An Eagle in Your Mind" and Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy." Though it might be too sprawling for fans of just one or two of the acts included, Warp10+3: The Remixes is an effective statement of the electronic/dance world circa the end of the millennium.
