Warren G. Harding was the first presidential nominee to campaign after the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed. This amendment gave women in the United States the right to vote. Harding was a nice looking man who gave good speeches, but in his three years as president, his administration was plagued with problems and corruption, due in part to his choice of cabinet members and his trusting nature. In 1891, Harding married Florence Mabel King De Wolfe and although they were married until his death, he was not always a faithful husband. Harding's political life began with his seat in the Ohio state senate. After serving two terms, he ran for lieutenant governor of the state and won. When he decided to run for governor, he lost. Instead, he won a seat in the U.S. Senate. After serving one year in this position, he was nominated as the Republican candidate for the presidency and in 1921, he delivered his inaugural address. President Harding had many difficult issues to deal with in his three years of office. Immigration limits, prohibition, and the failing economy plagued his administration. In 1923, President Harding suffered an apparent heart attack and died. Author Somervill does not gloss over this president's inadequacies.
