Publishers Weekly

Despite an unoriginal starting point, Wolff's passionate and magical third Highland romance (after 2008's Master of the Highlands) proves compelling. When Harvard student Haley Fitzpatrick is inexplicably transported to 17th-century Scotland, war hero Alasdair MacColla assumes she's one of the enemy Campbells. He keeps a wary eye on her, but her atypical strength and beauty slowly disarm him, just as his courage and larger-than-life physique arouse Haley's tender and romantic feelings. She knows that Alasdair will be betrayed in battle and decides to do whatever it takes to save him, even if it means creating a new version of history. Wolff brings the violent and territorial era to life and mixes in a passionate love story that is certain to please fans and entice new readers. (Jan.)

WARRIORS OF THE HIGHLANDS is an engaging time travel romance converge into a wonderful tale

Harvard University graduate student Haley Fitzpatrick is doing her dissertation on early modern historical weapons although her faculty advisor loathes her topic as being insignificant in the modern world. When she comes across an odd sword circa 1675 and a painting of her with the long dead Highland brutal warrior Alasdair ¿MacColla¿ McDonald, she is shocked. She is unaware that a seventeenth century witch Finona doing the bidding of the Campbells has placed a curse on the sword to insure MacColla¿s bride comes to distract his mind from war.

Back in modern day Boston when she touches the weapon, Haley is propelled back in time to 1675. As MacColla rescues his sister from his enemy the Campbell clan, he captures a stunned Haley near their encampment. He assumes she is a spy while she knows he is a vicious cold killer. However, as they fall in love, he realizes she is no Campbell agent and she concludes he loathes having to shed one drop of blood even that of his foes. She also sadly knows he will soon die in battle.

WARRIORS OF THE HIGHLANDS is an engaging time travel romance starring a strong pairing as Haley learns first hand that to the victors goes the history books as her beloved is nothing liked the modern day depiction of him. Although she adapts too easily to being sent back over three centuries ago, fans will enjoy Veronica Wolff¿s fine tale as the author blends in real persona to anchor the time and place. Readers will enjoy the saga of twenty-first century Harvard meets seventeenth century Highlander.

Harriet Klausner

Harriet Klausner

    A serious must read!!!!!

This book is the 3rd book of the series and, in my opinion, the best so far. The author has certainly improved in writing this series. The heroine in this book is quite strong and was able to defend herself and the male hero! The plot moved along quite nicely and the characters also developed as the plot went on. There's never a boring part in the Warrior of the Highlands!!!!

    good read

I enjoyed this book and was disappointed at once not to find another book waiting. I love a little history mixed with the unexplainable. If you like the highlander books these are along the same line without the 900 page investment.

    Captivating love story

I wanted to continue reading about Highland people, and enjoyed knowing that this is a fictional story about a "real" person. I love to go the the author's website after reading her book to find out the real story behind the characters.

Warrior of the Highlands by Veronica Wolff

Reviewed for queuemyreview.com; book release Jan09

Do you dream of braw Highlanders, time travel, and a hint of witchcraft? If so, then you should enjoy Veronica Wolff¿s ¿Warrior of the Highlands¿ which nicely combines all three in a tale of family, sacrifice, and love.

Haley is a woman who has faced her fear and turned it into bravery. After surviving an attack by two men, she used her fear and her family¿s knowledge to learn to fight. When researching for her thesis she comes upon an old weapon that suggests an error in historical accounts of Scotland and transports her back in time. Suddenly she¿s facing one of the greatest warriors of Scottish history, Alasdair MacColla. Soon her disbelief turns to love and fear¿fear because she knows her history¿and MacColla will die soon. But Haley refuses to give up, and she¿ll even turn to a dark witch if it will give her another chance to save him.

MacColla knows naught beyond the desire to fight Campbell and regain his clan lands. He freed his father and brother from Campbell¿s dungeons, but now his sister languishes there. While on a daring raid to free her, he runs into a strange woman. Thinking she must be a Campbell, he brings her along as insurance. But when pursuing Campbell¿s attack, she saves his life and he hers realizing she must be an enemy of Campbell and therefore his ally. She¿s so different from any woman he¿s known and it doesn¿t take long for him to fall under her spell. Yet she predicts his death and wants to keep him from fighting, and that¿s something he just can¿t do.

At times very heart-wrenching, this is one hot love story. Both have to learn to lean a little and trust the other. Towards the end, their unwavering belief in each other, the choices they make, and their love are what ensures their happy ending¿witchcraft aside. Wolff¿s research into her subjects is evident in the skillful way she combines fact and fantasy to bring love and humanity to a figure history recalls as a savage fighter.

The story is riveting, the plot imaginative, and the pacing is fast enough to keep the action rolling throughout. Veronica Wolff managed to bring a piece of the Highlands, and history, to my reading room. I was a bit sad to see the story of these two strong characters come to an end. ¿Warrior of the Highlands¿ is a pleasant afternoon read and will make you wish for a Highlander of your own.
