Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

In "The Executioner," Jennifer Brissett tells an eerie tale of a woman randomly chosen to serve as a one-time bringer of death, while in Jennifer R. Povey's "Working the High Steel," a Mohawk woman defies her gender to traverse the "high beams" of space construction. Other contributors include Ian Whates, Ardath Mayhar, Jeff Crook, and Kate MacLeod. VERDICT The 15 original stories in this theme collection explore the many roles of women in the future, as warrior, nurturer, or sometimes both. A good selection for larger sf collections.

Jolly good read featuring remarkable women

SHOP TALK is a good adventure with an interesting setting and characters, CHANGER mixes the exotic with the familiar, LADY BLAZE is light entertainment that delights, SISTER GRASS explores the truly alien, HEART BOWED DOWN is one of my favorites and explores AI intelligence in a non cliched way, PEACOCK DANCER is a beautiful story, BENEATH THE ALIEN SHIELD is another one I liked a lot. The asteroid setting and Kester, the main character reminded me a little of Rippley in ALIEN.

All in all, this is a great collection featuring women in extreme situations.
