Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A veritable who's-who of the "Cats of the Clans" membership, this is probably not a good idea to read independently from the series! The names and attributes will mean nothing. For Clan followers, this will give insight into each cat, his lineage and his forte in life. Hunter's infatuation with astrology and mythology comes through quite clearly in references to past lives, medicinal prowess, and clan allegiances. Each cat-member is shown in a full-page color illustration accompanied by a one-page, two- to three-paragraph description of his acceptance into the clan, how he arrived, his strengths, and any known lineage. In addition, each of the four clans (ThunderClan, ShadowClan, WindClan, RiverClan) has a double-page spread. Each clan possesses unique characteristics that are reminiscent of street "gangs," including violence, relationships and daily struggles. This work will never be confused with West Side Story, but it could serve as a precursor to more classical works, if a creative facilitator is involved! Reviewer: Elizabeth Young

Gr 4 Up

This guide to the phenomenally popular series uses a loose narrative structure to introduce the cats: three kittens have lost their way en route to Star Clan and are told stories by a mysterious narrator known only as Rock. The telling of the tales is organized by clan, giving a full-page overview of each character's place in the saga. While this book is a handy companion for fans of the series, it is absolutely mind-boggling for anyone who has not read at least one of the novels. The dizzying number of felines and their relationships is difficult to keep track of, and events mentioned make no sense without prior knowledge of the books. The lack of family trees is unfortunate-there are by now several generations of cats, as well as cross-mating among the clans-and there is a breakdown of the naming codes used to distinguish the warriors; titles such as "kit," "paw," and "star" change as the cats move up within the hierarchy of the clans. One element that will be evident to new readers is the ferocity of these animals' lives, which is in keeping with the tone and spirit of the novels. The full-color portraits of these cats are spectacular. They show these characters to be exciting, vibrant, and unique, and will interest new readers much more than the tone-heavy, mysterious musings of the narrator.-Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA

Meet the Author

Erin Hunter
Erin Hunter

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

Warriors: Cats of the Clans

Chapter One

Three Lost Travelers

Who's there? Come forward, into the moonlight. Three kits, smelling of stars and the night? You're a long way from StarClan, little ones. Did you stray too far into the shadows at the edge of your territory? You must be surprised to end up here, far beneath the ground, with such a strange-looking cat to welcome you. I doubt my name, or this place, is spoken of in StarClan.

Hush, don't be scared. I won't hurt you. I'll show you the path home when day breaks, when there is light to see your way. Lie down—the floor is more comfortable than you may think. See how smooth it is underpaw? I would not exchange it for all the prickles and tickling things that line your nests. I have long forgotten how I ever slept amid such rustling. It is always silent here, apart from the echo of the water.

What did you say your name was? Mosskit? Of course, Bluefur's kit, Mistyfoot and Stonefur's little sister. And the underfed tom beside you? Adderkit, yes, from WindClan. You were very young to go to StarClan, weren't you? And named for the snake that . . . Yes, I know you too, Blossomkit! Your white fur is unusual for a ShadowClan cat. Brokenstar may have promised you that you'd be a warrior before any other kit in the forest, but I don't think he ever imagined you going into battle. You died too young, but trust me, you were saved from even greater horrors.

Three little kits who didn't live long enough in the forest to learn about your Clanmates, their friends, and their rivals. There is a price to be paid in being a kit forever.

If you settle down—yes, evenyou, Mosskit—then I'll answer your questions about the cats you left behind. Ha, the night is not long enough to tell you everything I know! There are so many cats, many more than you know about. You would be here a moon and more to hear of them all. But I shall tell you about the ones I remember most clearly, and the ones I watch still. Oh, yes, I have watched them all, from as far back as any cat in the Clans can remember, and farther. And not only the four Clans that live beside the lake now. Much as they might wish to think they are the center of this world, there are cats of equal worth—or more—far beyond their fragile borders. Cats reviled for being loners and rogues, simply because they do not wish to live in a hive of chattering voices: poor beleaguered SkyClan, driven out because of their fellow Clans' selfishness; the Tribe of Rushing Water, who cling stubbornly to the mountains like the moss that grows beside the waterfall—I know them all. And BloodClan, who are not worthy of the name of Clan, and who will fade into the stuff of nursery tales once they have consumed themselves with their hunger for battle and bloodshed.

Who am I? I am Rock, the keeper of the world beneath the one your former Clanmates walk.

The watcher for more moons than you can dream of.

And the seer of all the moons to come.

Now, be still and listen.

This is what I Think About the Ending of Sunrise and the Beggining of the New Series

Firestar is the BEST CAT EVER!!!! BTW its Mousefur, not Mudfur(Mudfur died in the old forest remember?)
I really hope Hollyleaf escaped the tunnels, because I liked her. I know she was annoying sometimes, but she respected the Warrior code more then anybody. (How many of YOU can say you always follow the code and stick to the rules?) She was intellegent and thoughtful. ThunderClan should honnor that.
Honeyfern should not have died! I was it had been Mousewisker, or someone annoying. :( She was gonna have kits with Berrynose!!! :(
Jayfeather and Lionblaze are SO AWESOME! :D Im sad Hollyleaf died, but Im glad it wasn't Lionblaze or Jayfeather.
I KNOW, I KNOW there's a gray cat on the cover, but I reallyy hope its Ivykit! No offense to graystripe or cinderheart, but Im sick of so many gray cats!!! There's MILLIONS OF THEM!
Where's Leafpool now??? I miss her she was so amazing and sweet. I miss her and hope she comes back!
Im grateful to Nightcloud. She kept Crowfeather focused on his Clan. I know he and Leafpool were never the same again, but he needed to stick with WindClan. Thanks, Nightcloud.
On the subject of WindClan, WHY did Onestar have to go so bad?!?! He was my fav cat before he became leader! He used to be sweet and gentle, now he's attacking the ThunderClan camp!!! Why did he do that again? Im confused.
Sol, Firestar's kin? No offense but HONESTLY, the way Sol is now, its hard for me to imagine him a kittypet.(I know Firestar was, but Firestar is special)
I am glad Ashfur died. I never trusted him from the moment he was born.
If he loved Squirrelflight so much why did he try to hurt her? I thought he would keep flirting with her, to see if he could get her to change her mind. What a jerk.
I wish Lionblaze had killed Tigerstar in his dream. I HATE HIM!!! Sorry, but he caused to many things to go wrong. Like when Stonefur died. :( I loved him. :'(
Warriors is the best series of book in the whole world. I love reading them and I cant wait for the new book to come out. I hope this reveiw helped you out some.
Thanks for letting me share my ideas,
    Silvertail in ThunderClan

    Say What Now

Everyone is saying that Icecloud and Lionblaze are going to end up together, but I think Cinderheart and Lionblaze are going to end up together considering the walk they just took. Anyway there are many questions that still are to be answered. One of these questions are Did Firestar lose one life or two?

Here's my opinion on what the new book will be like, enjoy.

Some people say that WHITEWING would be the last member of the Three, but Erin Hunter counts Cloudtail and Firestar(that guy ROCKS:))as the same generation, so Dovekit or Ivykit will be in the Three. I'm SO SAD Honeyfern died! :( Its cruel!!! Hollyleaf could be a little annoying, but she had more respect then anybody for the Warrior Code. Even more then Firestar. If you don't like Hollyleaf, fine. But I think she deserves to be honnered because of her courage and willingness to do the right thing. One question, what will happen to Leafpool now? Dose she die in the forest? Join another clan? Im confused. I don't think Toadkit will be Jayfeather's apprentice. He talks about it, yes, but dose he really fit the part? Hollyleaf changed her mind, I think Toadkit will, too. He dosen't seem like the kind of cat to be gentle and caring for others. I imagine him hunting for mice, not yarrow. Jayfeather and Lionblaze are so AMAZING!!! I'm not sure who I like better. Don't get me wrong, I think Leafpool is amazing, but I think it was a bad idea on her part to name Jayfeather after his father. I cant believe Crowfeather was such a jerk! You'd think he'd be at least a LITTLE happy that he has 3(now 2)more kits! I think he needs to remember how much he loved Leafpool, and how much Leafpool loved him. They had to go their seprate ways, no choice. I wonder what the kit's power will be. I know there's a gray cat on the cover, but what if that isn't Dovekit? what if its Graystripe or Cinderpelt? I hope its Ivykit who will be in the Three, I'm not really sure why though.(lol) Thanks for reading my comment, I hope it answered any questions you might have. I love Warriors and I can't wait to read the new book. Buh Bye, Frosttail in Thunderclan.

Say what now- this can't happen!!!

Many people belive that icecloud and lionblaze will be together. i read the last book and i think cinderheart and lionblaze will be together. but how will lionblaze be able to have a mate in the nursery, with kits. guess who tigerstar would try to train. lionblaze's kits would be a total disadvantage if tigerstar got a hold of them. what would lionblaze do? would he fight on the side of his clanmates and starclan, or the dark forest simply because he didn't want to fight his kits? and would he pay more attention to his kits and mate or to the prophecy? and will brambleclaw ever forgive squirelflight and leafpool??

    Good...not exeptional

This was a good book and a MUST read for Warrior fanatics. It was not what I expected though. It was very small and didn't have enough about each cat...or enough cats! It was too expensive to be so small but the pictures were worth alot. It helped identify alot of cats in the video at the Warriors website. It also hinted to some of the things to come :' I was dissapointed though! Not all the facts were correct. Leafdapple, current leader of SkyClan was a loner to start with, NOT a kittypet! Who would name a kittypet Leaf, it's clearly a loner name! I think Erin might need a new editor!!! I do recommend this book though.

    Sort of Disapointing

I thought this would be a good book but when i got it i realized that there was hardly any of the charicters in it. It only had about 6 or 7 charicters per clan. It was also the same price as the other book and was about 1/4 of the size. Erin hunter should have added a lot more pictures and back stories they could have added a lot more. The pictures that were in it though were pretty cool though

    Good closer

I have to say it is a great book. Before you get it though, be forewarned that it was rather emotional, good as well as bad. Overall though the only other problem I could find was the occasional typo. In other words, I was pleased with it and I believe it is a very good closer on the series.

    My Opinion

I can't wait for this book! @ first i thought it'b be Ivykit but then the cover has Dovekit so... that kinda ruind it.and Something tells me that the one with omunis dreams- will have Tigerstar in 'em. Just a hunch. And now thinking about it- i think Hollyleaf wasn't on of the three- i mean she didn't real have any powers.
At 1st my fav cat point of veiw to read from was Lionblaze- because when Hollyleaf went 2 help Riverclan- i found that kinda annoying. And Jayfeather was too hotheaded. but in the end Jayfeather was my fav.
I hope they do the piont of veiw thing like thay did in The power of three because The New prophesy (or how ev u spell that) was all over- u could never predict with cat's piont of veiw u'd hear from.
One thing that kinda gets me anoyed is that every prophesy- they say- This is the biggest thing that's happen to the clans.
Another thing 2 the last person's comment- it's Mousrfur not Mudfur.
My- fav's would b- Firestar- b'cause he's the best. Cloudtail- cause he's cool. Leafpool- cause i like her calmness.Greystripe- cause he's verry loyal. Whitestorm, LionHeart, Spotted Leaf, Yellowfang, and all of the old leaders(even though they're dead)- cause, well idk just do :)

this book is going to be amazing

I think that dovekit is going to be the third of the three because lion jay dove they are all anamial beginings holy and ivy are plants not anamial so it fits. I think that brambleclaw will forgive squirrelflight and leafpool will become an elder. I also think that some how skyclan will come back and find the clans and I hope that they do because i really liked the skyclan cats. I think that firestar would like to see skyclan come back so he could know how they made out. I think that lepordstar will die she is so old. I wonder what happened to princess and if she will ever come back to the clans i think it would be good if she did because i liked her. I also wonder if graystripe and sandstorm will become elders in this book because mousefur and longtail aren't that much older than them and they have alreday been elders for a while so i think they might become elders in this book.
