Meet the Author

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    Amazing book series

I have been a book lover for as long as I can remember. When my son was born, I delved into a new genre of books - childrens books. I have always wanted him to share my passion for reading. Until this series, he's only moderately read - mostly to satisfy school requirements. Now, though, my child cannot get enough! He loves this series and saves his allowance so he can buy the next series. I am so thankful to the author for writing books that have grabbed my child!

    My daughter can't get enough!

My 7 year old daughter was half way through the first book when I decided to buy the box set. Within 3 minutes of it being delivered, she had torn into the box and was reading book #2. She can't get enough.

Now she's on her 9th WARRIOR book and has many of her 4th and 5th grade friends reading and discussing the characters.

I like the fact that it's good reading without the "boyfriend-girlfriend" aspect that is found in so many tween books these days. This series was recommended to me by a teacher for 4-6 grade reading level and I HIGHLY recommend it.

Warriors Books are perfect for boys, girls, & parents

My daughter has been reading the Warriors series for the past year. She was getting them out of the school library then we bought the ones the library didn't have. My daughter has finished the books from all three series, the manga comics, and is now on Firestars Prophecy. I have only finished the first series but was totally enthralled with the stories, characters, and drama. I have thoroughly enjoyed these books as much as my 11 yr. old daughter. The vocabulary is challenging enough for her to have asked for definitions.
I am glad she found this series and dragged me into this glorious world of cats.

    My daughter devoured it.

My daughter loves these books! At 12 she can finish an entire set in about a week and a half. From there, she passes them on to friends - all of them enjoy The Warrior Series.

    Warriors is great!

This book has so many thrills! It is great! I bring it into school all the time! I read it every school night before bed. Boys and girls of all ages will enjoy reading this exicting series! I love this series not because of the species of charactor but for the thrill that urges the reader on, leading to the final book! Try it out!

Great for kids who love to read and read and read......

This is the 2nd series that I've bought for my 9 yr old daughter. She is a real reader and loves books that are part of an ongoing series. She started reading the 1st box set at the beginning of the year and is almost done with this box set. Her friends, (boys and girls), all talk about the characters and storyline daily! It's not much of an educational read, but can't reading be "just for fun" sometimes?

entertaining, thrilling, and surprising to read.

The warrior series is a series that anyone can read (mostly fourth grade and up). I recommend this book to those who enjoy reading both about cats and fighting. This book is also very surprising, it made me wonder how it had happened, and the cool part is that it gives you clues in each word, so if you skip a paragraph, and the book goes back to talk about that paragraph, you will have no idea what the book is talking about, and finish the book not knowing anything. Not a lot of the book is funny, because there is constant fighting, rewarding, and a lot of seriousness, that there never seems enough time to have humor. in conclusion, this series is a series that i will never forget.

    The best series ever

I absolutely love the warriors series. I'm not really a big cat person, honestly I really don't like cats, but I love these books. This is the kind of book that you will sucked into. You will not be able to put them down. I finished all the warrior books, the original seires, new prophecy, the power of three, omen of the stars, & all the special editions in 2 months. They were that good. I finished them, then started again! Hope everyone gets a chance to read this series!!!!

    It was alright...

I'll give you all the negatives and positives of this entire series.
Positive: It kept you on the edge of your seat (at the end). Good for kids under the age of 10.

Nagatives: What I'd say about this whole series is that it was way too dramatic. Sure, us humans have problems but really; cats?! These cats are going through stuff that happens to people in MOVIES. Theres betrayal, sadness, love, danger, and a cat heaven?! I'd just say the author tried too hard. If I was supposed to be writing a story about cats, I would just quit. You cant get anything out of it!!! You cant put in emotion, because it sounds stupid, you cant put in pain (unless its physical), and you cant put in betrayal, because HOW on EARTH can cats betray one another?! If the author wanted to put emotions and FEELING into the book, she did a very bad job of it because she makes the cat look like a human!!! They "talk" to each other, they are surprisingly organized, they have a time and a place for eating, they have something like a cat government, they have "rules" and "schools" (with tutors) and they even have something like a "doctor"!! Its ridiculous!! The author makes them sound like an everyday average human being. She definitely tried WAY too hard...
