Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

As the sun begins to rise on a new Warriors series, readers squint their eyes towards the horizon. Erin Hunter's new saga involves a threatened clan of cats, a vision of deliverance, a quest, and looming dangers on every side.

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
The Sun Trail is a story about many cats living in a cave with little food or space. They see a ray from the rising sun and decide to follow it hoping to find a new place that will be beautiful and where food will be plentiful. They are tired when the journey begins and it only gets worse as they travel, since none of them have ever been out of the mountains before. Clear Sky is a great brother and friend, but it does not last. His brother, Gray Wing, has strong feelings for Storm, but Clear Sky took her from him. Eventually, his family and friends become second to him, and he turns on the moor cats. This book has great adventure, it is fast moving, and filled with powerful emotions. There characters are well-developed and the storyline leaves readers excited for the next book. Recommended. Part of the "Warriors" series. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs

Meet the Author

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. In addition to having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers and Survivors series.

Wayne McLoughlin studied art at San Diego State University and has worked as a writer and illustrator for such magazines as Esquire and National Lampoon. His books for children include Fireflies, by Alice Hoffman, Here is the Wetland, by Madeleine Dunphy (both Hyperion), and Loch, by Paul Zindel. He lives with his wife and daughter in Bellows Falls, Vermont.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    Awesome!

YES! Finely its on the nook!! It will be so cool to see how the clans were first made and maybe even how the cat first got together! I also really like the cat on the cover! He reminds me of firestar only more of a red-ish-brown.

    Yes! And if ur wondering....

Ya this book is going to be about well duh the beinging of the clans!! This should carry on for a long while. And i ur wondering why till 5th if march is because this book is gona be alot of pages!!! And shes still gona edit it and get the book copies read then b&n has to make the progarm and test to see if the books uploda and they have to transfer ALL the book over to a nook. So it takes a while. I say till January to finish up the book and all of Febuary to get the dowlaoded versions ready. So thts 2 months left till the Hardcover Warriors books come. And thts why it takes long. U want it sooner then fine get a short, sooner ordered crappy book. Or. Wait get a nice long book tht is very detailed and AWESOME. Ur choice...

    Seriously?

Seriously? Erin Hunter, give it up already!!!!!!! Aren''t there ENOUGH warriors books yet?. I used to adore these books. And then more came out...and more...and more and more and more and...i mean, enough is ENOUGH! Going into the Omen of the Stars series, i began to feel like erin was struggling for ideas, willing to put anything into books so that fans would keep buying anything that came out under the warriors name!!! I was right. The magic and ghost cats were just too much. I finished the book where firestar dies (hated it so much i forget the name) and promptly put my enourmous set of warriors books in our yard sale. And now this. I don't get how people can still be reading these. I mean, how many times can you read about magic cats before getting sick to your stomach? I know lots of people will totally disagree with my review, but my opinion is my opinion, so you'll have to get over it. >.<

    The sun trail

Great book about how the cats traveled from the mountains to the forest. They met the first cats who lived there. Hint: Cloud Spots and Dapple Pelt, two of the first medicine cats, are from the mountains. They know alot about herbs. Gray Wing, Jagged Peaks, Shaded Moss, Cloud Spots, Dapple Pelt,Moon Shadow, Quick Water, Clear Sky, Falling Feather, Hawk Swoop, and Bright Stream go on the journey to the forest. Bright Stream dies saving Gray Wing from an eagle.

    Hi

    Name: Rippleflare
    Gender: She-cat
    Mate: Hollowbone
Family: Sister Snowflash, mother Ivyflame, father ??
History: Rippleflare was born in the season of Newleaf. Her mother Ivyflame licked her gray pelt. Her sister Snowkit gently tugged at Ripplekit's ear. Ripplekit soon started to open her eyes. "Her eyes are open!" Ivyflame exclaimed. Soon, Snowkit's started to open, also. Just then Featherwhisker came bounding in. "Where are the kits?" She asked. "Oh no, Featherwhisker. Not your traditional excitement of the kits." Moaned Ivyflame. "Please don't excite them." "If I didn't excite them, it wouldn't be a tradition anymore!" Grinned Featherhisker. "Hey kits," Featherwhisker whispered. "Come here and I'll tell you something. Ever hear of the outside world? Ripplekit and Snowkit shook their heads. "Well, it's big, exciting, and fun!" "Really?" Asked Snowkit. "Yep. Go out there!" "Okay," sighed Ivyflame. "You can go out." Then Ripplekit and Snowkit ran outside.
After a while of getting her apprentice name, fighting and hunting, Ripplepaw and Snowpaw finally got their warrior names. "Ripplepaw, you will be now be known as Rippleflare. StarClan honors you for your loyalty and couage. Snowpaw, you will be known as Snowflash. StarClan honors your loyalty and courage." Pinestar said cheerily. "We're Warriors!" Said Rippleflare to Snowflash. "Yeah," Snowflash agreed. I can't believe it!"

And that is how Rippleflare lived after that.
