Meet the Author

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. In addition to having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers and Survivors series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    Goldenstar

Greetings, I am Goldenstar of GoldenClan. We are a new clan looking for loyal and ACTIVE warriors. If you are gone for a while, please have a good excuse. All positions are open (exept leader of course). We go for a more realistic feel, so there are no super powers (exept the usual med cat talking to and interpreting signs from starclan). To apply go to directory of montana result 175 (the last one) and tell me your name, gender, apperance, and position you are applying for.
    Example:
    Goldenstar
    She-cat
Tiny with a shocking golden pelt, one ice blue eye and one warm amber eye that have a very disconcerting effect on other cats.
    Leader
Our territory is very large, so I have posted a directory at result 174 (second to last). Thank you and may starclan light your path,
    ~Goldenstar

    Rabbitleals Journey

    "Look, Rabbitkit! A fox!"
Rabbitkit spun around, his blue eyes darting around. "Where? I don't see a fox!"
Just at that moment, Rabbitkit's sister, Featherkit, crashed into him and stole thr mossball at his paws. She dangled it between her claws teasingly.
"Ha!" Featherkit squeaked. "You fell for it!"
"Yeah," Mudkit, Rabbitkit's brother, added. "They should call you gullible kit."
"Well they should call you Unfairkit!" Rabbitkit spat back. He hissed. "That was cheating!"
"Was not," Featherkit mewed. "I just got the mossball from you."
"Because your so easy to fool!" Mudkit teased.
"You think I was actually LOOKING?" Rabbitkit growled in his deepest voice. "I sneezed."
    "I didn't hear a sneeze," Mudkit sniffed. "All I heard was, 'Where? I don't see a fox!'"
"Whatever," Rabbitkit muttered. "Let's play Clans!"
"Ooh! I call being Cloudstar!" declared Featherkit, ruffling her grayish fur.
"Hey, I wanted to be Cloudstar! Why do you get to be him? I want to be leader," Mudkit grumbled.
"Because I called it, rabbit brain," Featherkit told him. "You can be Moorclaw. He's the deputy."
    "Not the leader though!"
"Fine," Featherkit hissed, "If you want to be a leader, there's other Clans too."
"But....! Fine, I guess I'll be Moorclaw."
"Okay, Rabbitkit! You have to be another Clan. We can't fight each other," Featherkit said in her usual bossh voice.
"Can I be.... Stonestar?" Rabbitkit asked.
"ThunderClan doesn't share a border with us, Rabbitkit," Mudkit told him. "Be ShadowClan."
"I'll be Toadstar, then," Rabbitkit growled. "I'll lead an attack, okay?"
Featherkit and Mudkit nodded. Rabbitkit crouched down in the grass, the wind blowing on his cream colored fur. He leapt at Moorclaw, aka Mudkit and pinned him down. Mudkit squealed with delight and flipped him back over.
"Cloudstar!" Mudkit signaled Featherkit. "I need backup!"
Featherkit pounced on Rabbitkit, who was squirming free of Mudkit's grasp. Rabbitkit pushed her back and tried to do a backick he saw one of the warriors do, but he missed and Mudkit pinned him down again. So close!
"Do you surrender, Toadstar?" Mudkit snarled.
"Yes! WindClan will never, ever be beaten!" Rabbitkit cried. Mudkit let go.
Featherkit licked her paw. "I'm hungry. Let's ask Blossomfur for some milk."
"Nonsense," Rabbitkit said, waving his tail. "We're three moons now. I'm hungry for some rabbit!"
    "Me too!" Mudkit mewed.
"You're going to get in trouble!" Featherkit called back, heading back for the nursery.
Mudkit and Rabbitkit headed for the freshkill pile. It was a warm day in greenleaf. The sun burned hot on his fur, but the gentle breeze cooled it off. It was just the perfect day.
The freshkill pe was humoungous. It was taller than him and Mudkit combined! He sniffed it. It smelled of meat.
"Nosing through the freshkill pile, eh?"
Rabbitkit and Mudkit spun around. It was Stormwhisker, one of the senior warriors. His green eyes glimmered in amusment as he looked at the kits.
"We were just looking," Rabbitkit gulped. He knew how strict Stormwhisker could be at times.
"I think you three are old enough to try," Stormwhisker rumbled. "Here, try some shrew. It's small enough for you."
He pawed the shrew so it tumbled down at Rabbitkit's paws.
"You kits enjoy, but stay out of trouble." Stormwhisker meowed.
Rabbitkit took a bite. It was too good for words.
"Featherkit is really missing out!" Mudkit mumbled.
Rabbitkit finished the shrew. If this was WindClan, he couldn't wait to get started!
