What goes on as a typical mythical fantasy quest adventure (whew!) turns into a dire morality tale with the most unexpected ending I've ever encountered, which might even leave the reader angry. This is a tale in the tradition of Beowulf, and seems like a typical story of disparate groups of people learning to appreciate each other and work together, but then it turns on a hairpin. Within the narrative are a number of god myths, the comic frustrations of an old man who just wants to die, and a tender love story that defies cultural traditions. Quite an interesting read.
