Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kip Wilson
One title in the "War Machines" series produced by Smart Apple Media, this book presents readers with overviews of the warships used during World War I and World War II. Glossy layouts include multiple images and fact boxes, engaging the young reader with short descriptions of what they see on the page. The images are authentic, black-and-white photographs which draw the reader back into the past. Short descriptions of battles involving these ships complete the picture. Coverage is particularly good for both British battleships and German submarines, some of the greatest ships of the twentieth century, but it also includes profiles of some cruisers and aircraft carriers. Because this book focuses only on World War I and World War II ships, its coverage is thorough and includes some great picks of ships to highlight. The glossary and list of websites will also be useful to readers wanting to find out more. Reviewer: Kip Wilson

Gr 4-6

A reminder that some things with wheels are a bit more grim than sports cars, motorcycles, and construction machines, this series presents 20th-century American, British, French, German, Japanese, and Russian military equipment. The texts are brief, with much information conveyed in captions and boxes with specifications, performance data, armament, and miscellaneous facts. Each volume begins with definitions and a history of the weapon, which leads into two-page descriptions of 12 examples, arranged chronologically. An account of their use and success in war is included. This arrangement, along with the readable explanations, helps trace the development of each kind of weapon on an international scale through the century. Excellent photos, almost all in black and white, depict these machines and include some pictures of them in action or under attack, such as the sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamato . In short, this is a stylish and well-executed production.
