Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
The illustrations and text demonstrate that warts on toads are not only unattractive, but are also harmful to many of their predators. Warts produce a poison which can be fatal to other animals that eat them. Other facts explain what warty toads eat, how they stay safe, and how they change from tiny tadpoles to adults. Their extensive habitats are shown to be world-wide in forests, parks, mountains, deserts, and lakes through vivid graphics and photographs. A Contents page provides the scope of the information. Although not divided into respective chapters, the individual divisions contribute to the whole topic. The book succeeds well overall in the presentation of information about this amphibious animal. Fact boxes and habitat maps highlight relevant information. The language is age appropriate. A Glossary defines the scientific terms. Sections titled Selected Bibliography, Read More, and Learn More Online are solid sources for student research The Index provides easy navigation through the book. This book is part of a six book series, "Amphibiana," which covers the unusual creatures which are amphibious animals. The topics in the series take a singular approach to other amphibious animals which include: Amazing Water Frogs, Leaping Ground Frogs, Little Newts, Slimy Salamanders, and Tricky Tree Frogs. Together, however, the books in this series define the world of amphibious animals. Reviewer: Annie Laura Smith
