Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
A fun and unique way to teach some necessary skills is used in this "Healthy Habits" series. Large colorful photographs show some popular animals (e.g., elephants, tigers, crocodiles) engaged in washing and cleaning themselves. Animals such as cheetahs wash by licking themselves, and we wash our skin with soap and water to keep it clean and soft. While birds keep their feathers smooth and clean, we need to comb our hair. A baby elephant uses mud to protect its skin from insects, but when we get dirty we needs a shower or a bath. A crocodile lets a bird clean the food from its teeth, but we need to use a toothbrush and toothpaste. We need strong teeth to bite into an apple, and a bear uses strong teeth to catch fish. Photographs "tell" most of the stories, accompanied by short sentences that provide the details, such as "a bear cub is gnawing a bone" to clean its teeth. "Think About It" question boxes teach the reader to stop taking in words and figure out what they mean, a successful reading strategy to learn at a young age. Appropriate as a read-aloud with preschoolers; elementary students can read this independently. Reviewer: RevaBeth Russell

PreS-Gr 2—In this inventive series, healthy habits in the animal kingdom and the human household are juxtaposed to emphasize the importance of good health, such as the fact that monkeys and apes floss their teeth with pieces of hair. With vibrant and fascinating full-color photographs and succinct texts, these titles are guaranteed to draw in children who might otherwise find the topic of healthy living a little dull. Eat makes nutrition recommendations and contains an image that shows the proportion of foods that we should eat, and even includes a small bit for sweets and oils. Move covers why exercise is important, while Sleep emphasizes the restorative powers of rest, and Wash goes over good hygiene. An all-around healthy treat.
