Washington has become as famous for its murder rate, drug traffic, and felonious city politicians as for the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the White House. Does anybody love it anymore? If not, they should, at least judging from the picturesque, informative, affectionate contents of this sheaf of essays by D.C. denizens well equipped to expatiate upon the city's history and attractions. These historians, journalists, and scholars expound, often quite personally, upon four aspects of their hometown: its historical face as "A Sleepy Southern Town," its trappings as "A Capital City," the artworks and documents that constitute its "Capital Delights," and the buildings, parks, streets, and, of course, the Redskins, that for its residents make up "Washington Itself." The four or five essays in each of those four parts are good, congenial reading made all the better by lots of classy photos. This is one of the best travel brochures ever, although 'way too big to stuff in a vertical file.
