Description: This is the third edition of a concise, portable reference on the essential information needed when performing an inpatient consult. The previous edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a guide for physicians in residency training programs serving on the internal medicine consultation service on how to approach patients with specific complaints.
Audience: This is primarily for resident physicians in training, but it also is useful for medical students and others looking for a succinct outline of internal medicine problems.
Features: The book is organized using the typical organ system approach, with individual chapters discussing specific complaints and diagnoses. Each chapter discusses general principles concerning the diagnosis, typical clinical presentation, diagnostic testing, and treatment considerations. The book describes access to an electronic, full-text version through VitalSource eBooks, but I was unable to access it.
Assessment: This is one of many books for physicians in internal medicine programs. The inability to access the electronic version is a distinct disadvantage for this particular one.
