Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)

This review of the spiral bound version (ISBN 9781605470146) originally appeared in 2010.

This is the 33rd edition of one of the pillars of a house officer's life. It literally has everything residents need to have in their lab coat pockets. The previous edition was published in 2007 and this update is quite complete and timely.

Purpose: This has been an easy-to-use, pocket-sized manual for house officers, and this edition has continued its outstanding heritage of excellence.
Audience: Although dedicated to the medicine housestaff of Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the book really is for all who practice inpatient medicine. Having said that, it is also helpful for those who practice outpatient medicine to remain current and understand what has occurred when their patients are admitted to an inpatient facility.
Features: The book is divided in the usual organ system manner with additional chapters on transplant medicine and critical care. Chapters are further divided into specific issues such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, etc., which include the general principles of physiology, diagnosis, treatment, potential complications, patient education, and follow-up recommendations. Among the outstanding features are intuitive tables and figures. This edition also offers access to a mobile version through Skyscape. However, I experienced significant difficulties getting access to the mobile version as the web site listed on the inside front book cover did not work, and when I went to the Skyscape website, I could find no place to input the serial number to access the download. I spent an hour with the Skyscape live chat help line and was eventually able to get the mobile version to work on my PDA. (I was told I should have downloaded the trial version.) The print book is superb, but the mobile version does not have adequate software support.
Assessment: This is one of the best books for housestaff and attendings who care for hospital inpatients. I highly recommend it to all. However, in these times of dependence on electronic media, the software vendor does not support the text very well, which is truly unfortunate.
