Description: This surgical manual was written by the residents and attendings at Washington University Department of Surgery. The handbook begins with several chapters focusing on the basic principles of surgical care (i.e., nutrition, hemostasis, and wound care) and then proceeds with an overview of the presentation, diagnosis and management of surgical diseases. The chapters are organized by organ system and surgical specialty and are accompanied by a well-designed appendix of useful formulas.
Purpose: The manual provides a concise, well-focused, and up-to-date discussion of surgical disease, with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment. The algorithms give a brief and rational approach to the management of patients with surgical problems. Thus, the objectives are well met.
Audience: Although the handbook is directed to the reader at the level of the second- or third-year house officer, it is a useful reference for all residents and medical students who deal with surgical problems. The concise explanations and pocket size make it perfect for quick reference on the wards.
Features: Most chapters are accompanied by either charts, tables, or diagrams that nicely complement the text. The appendix of commonly used formulas is especially helpful because it provides a comprehensive list of critical care formulas and laboratory values.
Assessment: Although similar handbooks are available, this one is more informative than other ward references I have used. In conjunction with a surgical textbook, this well-organized and comprehensive manual is a valuable learning tool.
