Overview

Washington is … green hills lapped by the blue Pacific and golden brown interior plains. It is a state of contradictions. Rain forest and sunbaked outback. Big city and small town. Logger and environmentalist. Urban trendsetter and range-riding cowboy. Blessed-or cursed-with a reputation as one of America's best places to live, Washington draws people from around the world. Newcomers and old-timers alike have visions of what the state should be. Their challenge is to find a vision that all can share.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
This book would be a fabulous choice for anyone wanting to know more about the state of Washington. It has factual material concisely stated and clearly organized. It covers the state geographically, historically, and culturally. It includes statements from famous citizens along with regular folk. It intersperses pertinent fables and interesting stories among pages of informative text. It is resplendent with full-page art, both drawings and photographs. It has a table of contents as well as an index. It is, in sum, a beautifully conceived and executed book.
Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Located in the far nonwestern corner of the United States, Washington is a state of great contrasts. The eastern portion of the state assumes a relatively flat and predictable aspect. At the same time, the coastal regions of this region contain some of the greatest temperate rain forest areas in the world. One need only contemplate a place like Olympic National Park, with all of its majestic scenery and wildlife, to realize just how pristine some of Washington can be. The story of this remote American state is the subject of this book in the illustrated "Celebrate the States" series. As is the case with other titles in this solid series, Washington features a fast paced narrative, solid writing, striking imagery, and a fact content that will augment younger readers' understandings of this area. Taken as a whole, these elements make Washington a reasonable purchase and a book that will assist young researchers of this beautiful state. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
